Church group joins labor call for secure jobs, living wages

ANGELES CITY — Religious groups and laity from Church-Labor Conference (CLC) on Sunday joined the militant groups here in calling for the scrapping of employment contractualization and higher wages and salaries for workers in Central Luzon.
The rally that started in Angeles City’s main thoroughfares and ended at the Plaza Miranda here was led by the Koalisyon Kontra Kontraktwalisasyon (Kontra) and the Manggagawa para sa Kalayaan ng Bayan (Makabayan). Hundreds of local workers and laborers attended the event.
Makabayan, in a statement, said they are pressing for higher wages, protection of workers, and universal health care, among others. They said that the rally aims to show the government that not much has changed of the “poor labor practices” in the country.
Makabayan added that they have marked the 125th anniversary of the international Labor Day with a nationally coordinated protest actions that underscores “job security and a living wage”.
The groups coordinator said that around 1,500 workers from Metro Manila converged at Morayta, and for a short program before marching to Mendiola. In Subic, Zambales, workers from HANJIN assembled in front of Subic National High School in Barangay Manggahan for a similar rally.
A letter of support from Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)-National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice and Peace chairman Bishop Broderick Pabillo was read in all of the protest rallies and was the highlight of the program at the Plaza Miranda here.
“Dapat naman talaga itaas na ang suweldo ng manggagawa… Yung decent naman na pagtaas ng suweldo kasi lahat tumataas… (There should be an increase and it should be decent because everything seems to be increasing),” Pabillo was quoted as saying.
Pabillo had also called on President Benigno Aquino III to be faithful to his campaign promise.
“It shows the bias of Malacañang. Are they siding with the workers or the capitalists?” Pabillo said. The CBCP official is hoping that President Aquino would remain faithful to his campaign promises last year.
Simultaneously, workers from Luisita Industrial Park (LIP), gathered at Ninoy Park for a rally demonstration, Makabayan said.
Meanwhile, the CBCP also called on the government agencies to respond to the problem of child labor. In the their official website, Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive director of the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice and Peace said various entities should appropriately respond to the problem of child labor through income-generating activities for children’s parents in order to support their brood.
