China recognizes Champagne geographical indication
China has officially recognized the geographical origin (AOC) of Champagne, following a request from the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC).
A geographical indication is a specific intellectual property law that designates a product from a specific region and whose specific characteristics result in both the natural conditions of each region and the expertise of local producers.
It is in Champagne, France, a vineyard located 150km east of Paris, that Champagne is being produced for more than three centuries under multiple and strict rules.
This recognition provides a widespread and effective protection for Champagne wines against all forms of misuse, according to the trade body.
Bureau du Champagne China director Wang Wei said: “This record will enable the competent authorities to strengthen their action against the misuse of which are now few, quickly detected and severely punished.”
According to CIVC, which established an office in Beijing in 2006, shipments of Champagne to China exceeded two million bottles in 2012, an increase of 51.8% over the previous year.
China has now emerged as the fifth Champagne market outside the European Union and the growth is expected to continue over the next years.
The Asian nation had granted a similar protected status to California’s Napa Valley wines in October 2012.
