Bus mishap should be a ‘wake-up call’ – kin

MEXICO – The family, relatives and friends of one the victims in a road mishap in Bulacan last September 17 said that the death of their loved one should be a “wake-up call” to Saulog Transit, Inc. and other bus operators.
The kin of Candice Marie Bondoc, 20, said the incident should serve as a lesson for the bus company and a warning that it should examine its drivers and the condition of its vehicles for the safety of the passengers.
Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.
Bondoc died when a Saulog bus, driven by Logie Parangat, hit the rear of a trailer truck before turning several times along the Bocaue-Sta. Rita stretch of the North Luzon Expressway in Bulacan around 1:20 p.m. Saturday amid heavy rains.
Bondoc, who was going home from Bible School together with Jenoshiva Medina, 32, died instantly, while Imelda Granada died at the Bulacan Polymedic Hospital in Guiguinto town.
Twenty-one others were injured or hurt in the fatal mishap, according to the Traffic Management Center of the Manila North Tollways Corporation.
“We are not after any financial issues here. We just want for them [Saulog Transit, Inc.] and other bus firms that the death of Candz should be a wake-up call since ang mga driver nila ang may hawak ng buhay ng kanilang pasareho. We have been informed na sobrang bilis talaga noong bus dahil naghahabol daw ng pasahero. In fact, two of our relatives flagged down the same Saulog Bus along a bus stop in Edsa pero sa sobrang bilis ay hindi sila nahintuan. Buti na lang ganoon. Pero itong pagkamatay ni Candice ay napakalungkot,” said Candice’s uncle Roger Bondoc.
“Candice was coming home from Bible School because she has this outreach ministry. She is the eldest among four na puro babae. She is pursuing her Master’s degree but her dreams were ended by the accident which could have been avoided,” added Roger.
As Candice was laid to rest Wednesday, he said that Saulog Transit, Inc. gave the family P10,000 for funeral expenses but a final settlement and explanation on the accident has to be reached.
“Again, I wish to stress na we are not after anything financial but just to know the real cause of the accident. In fairness to them, they have coordinated with us twice and we are expecting them today,” the family said.
Coming fast
Bondoc’s friend, Zion Sun, who was seated beside her along the driver’s side in the middle of the bus, said they knew something was wrong.
“Candice was sleeping but was awakened by the commotion as passengers started shouting. The bus at high speed started swerving. Bumulusok po. Mabilis po talaga at gumewang-gewang na ang bus. Pumikit na lang kami ni Candice at naramdaman na lang na sumalpok po kami doon sa trailer truck at pagkatapos ay gumulong-gulong sa gilid ng expressway. Nang huminto ay tinapik ko si Candice na nakahawak pa rin sa kamay ko pero she was no longer moving. She sustained head and spine injuries. It was only after an hour when she was attended to by emergency response people pero patay na nga siya,” Sun said.
Suspension, hearing
Two days after the accident, The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) headed by chairman Alberto Suansing suspended the franchise of Saulog Transit Inc. and ordered the transport firm to surrender the plate numbers of its 159 buses for a 30-day preventive suspension.
The LTFRB said any Saulog bus seen operating during the suspension period would be impounded. However, several of its buses have been spotted plying their usual routes.
While suspended, the LTFRB will inspect all buses used by Saulog to determine their road-worthiness; drivers will undergo drug testing, and together with company officials, they will be subjected to road safety seminars.
The LTFRB also ordered Saulog representatives to appear with driver Parangat during a hearing on the case on Thursday, September 22.
“Failure on the part of the respondent to bring its driver and to appear at the hearing on this case… shall be considered a waiver on its part to be heard and this case shall be decided on the basis of the records of the board,” the LTFRB said.
For the Bondocs, they said they continue to hope that the untimely death of Candice will be accorded due justice.
