Budget chief: Standing on two platforms is problematic

JOINING the campaign rallies of two different parties would be problematic, a leader of the ruling Liberal Party (LP) said Monday.

Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said the so-called common candidates should comply with the policy of the ruling party not to join campaign rallies of the rival – United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) – to avoid problem with the coalition.
“You know it’s going to be problematic not just for the candidates of all but also for the coalition. That’s why that policy precisely is meant to promote equity, fairness and harmony within the parties’ coalition,” said Abad, an LP stalwart.

Abad said those serving two parties at the same time are making themselves vulnerable to intrigues.
Senators Loren Legarda and Francis Escudero, and Movie and Television Review and Classification Board chairperson Grace Poe-Llamanzares are common candidates of the administration party led by President Benigno Aquino III and UNA of Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Abad said while the three agreed to be adopted by UNA, they still have to campaign under one party.

“You have to make a distinction between being adopted and campaigning with. You can be adopted without necessarily having to join them in their campaigns. You continue to endorse your slate. But the moment you endorse two slates, you’re going to be fodder for intrigues,” he said.
Asked if all three have submitted to the rules of ruling party, he answered: “Common sense dictates that even if you are not informed about it, you would know as a politician that if you stand on two platforms endorsing two sets of candidates, who will believe you? You will just yourself into trouble.”

President Benigno Aquino III on Monday led the proclamation of the final senatorial slate of the administration coalition at Club Filipino in San Juan City.

Aside from the common candidates, also included in the line-up are reelectionists Senators Alan Peter Cayetano, Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III and Antonio Trillanes IV; former senators Ramon “Jun” Magsaysay Jr. and Jamby Madrigal; Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara; former Las Piñas congresswoman Cynthia Villar; former Akbayan party-list representative Risa Hontiveros; and Aquino’s first cousin, Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV.

The candidates were drawn from five different parties: LP, Nationalist People’s Coalition led by Aquino’s uncle Danding Cojuangco, Nacionalista Party of Senator Manuel Villar, Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino led by Senator Edgardo Angara, and Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP) founded by Pimentel’s father and former senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr.

Abad said it is normal in Philippine politics to see candidates who are not allies but belong to the same party.

“That happens in Philippine politics, it’s nothing new. What is important is that the head is very clear about what the direction should be and I think that’s most important because that’s where the coalition should be headed,” he said.

He added that even President Aquino is satisfied with the administration slate knowing that they are pushing for one advocacy.
