Bizman in favor of CDC-CIAC merger

CLARK FREEPORT— Businessman Rene Romero said Saturday he is in favor of the proposal to merge the Clark Development Corporation and Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) into one entity for better administration and implementation of development and business plans.

Romero’s comment came as Sun.Star columnist Ram Mercado had earlier bared on his June 19 column that “a group of Pampanga newsmen” urged President Benigno Aquino III to reorganize the CDC and CIAC by merging their corporate existence under a single mother agency.

Mercado said the problems spawned by intramurals within the CIAC has prevented and stalled the Terminal 2 project at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport.
“Politics and bickering executives at the CIAC had caused the prolonged and pernicious stalemate in the proposed Terminal 2 project.

The facility will prepare the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) as a truly alternative international gateway to the country after the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA),” Mercado said.

Another media group opposes the proposed merger of CDC and CIAC, insisting on the status quo which effectively prevents a unified management under an official of President Aquino’s confidence, Mercado added.

However, for Romero, a merger would in effect do well for both CDC and CIAC. The vice chairman of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham) said that the merger would pave the way for a more unified implementation of development programs for CDC and CIAC.

“The merger would be better the development of Clark Freeport. It could be done in a way that there would be one president for the whole united entity and executive vice presidents for the airport and the Freeport,” Romero said, adding that the arrangement will bring down barriers in internal politics and management.

Romero said that CDC and CIAC have long been in their “infancy stages” and it is time to implement a different management approach that is more effective in reaching development goals.

He added that the two entities can revert back to their former status once they become too big to manage.
