Bishops refuse to call for Corona’s resignation

MANILA (Updated 5:36 p.m.) — Members of the influential Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) refused to issue a statement calling for the resignation of Chief Justice Renato Corona, who is now under trial for graft and corruption, among other offenses.
Instead, the bishops called on stakeholders in the impeachment trial to expedite the process so that the country can “return to normalcy”.
CBCP vice president Archbishop Socrates Villegas said the poor has been suffering so much already that it should not be worsened anymore by the trial.

“The impeachment process is not part of the normal life of a country and, therefore, the sooner we resolve this, the better so that we can return to normalcy and attend to the needs of the poor right away,” he told reporters after the 104th CBCP Plenary Assembly at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center in Manila.
The prelates noted how the poor have become the “silent victims” of the impeachment process of Corona as they are being deprived of the needed attention.
“Government services are delayed or not delivered because we are so concerned with the process. The distribution of land, aquatic, housing, environmental problems and these are put on the sidelines because of the impeachment process,” Villegas said.
Over the weekend, political analyst Ramon Casiple said Corona may step down if the bishops call for it.
But even without a pastoral letter stating the appeal for Corona to quit, one of his spokespersons believed that the Chief Justice will finish the legal fight.
“The Chief Justice already said before that he will fight this battle up to the end. He doesn’t think that there’s reason for him to resign so a pastoral letter won’t change his view,” lawyer Karen Jimeno told Sun.Star.
Also on Monday, High Court employees wore red to defend Corona from those trying to spread misinformation about their leader’s character.
“We chose red to show that we are extra-vigilant and fully supportive of the chief justice. There are other SC employees who are also asked to be summoned by the Senate impeachment court. This is our way of expressing solidarity with them,” Supreme Court Employees Association (SCEA) Jojo Guerrero said.
Last week, the House prosecution panel said they are looking to present some 100 witnesses in the impeachment trial of Corona, which could drag on for months.
Still, the CBCP appealed to the public to maintain their trust that the senator-judges are fully-capable of handling the trial judiciously.
“We exhort the people to give their respect and trust to the senator-judges and, of course, our respect and trust in the Constitutional processes,” CBCP president Archbishop Jose Palma said.
They also called on the faithful to closely monitor the proceedings while not forgetting to pray.
“We exhort our brothers and sisters, fellow Filipinos, to pray, study and to do whatever is legally or morally possible so that truth and justice will be attained or realized. We exhort the people to pray especially for wisdom and guidance,” Palma, the archbishop of Cebu, said. (Virgil Lopez/AMN/Sunnex)
