Binay bares plan to seek presidency in 2016

MANILA, Philippines – A day after his partymates expressed support for him, Vice President Jejomar Binay admitted that he is planning to run for president in 2016 even as he stressed that it is too early to talk about the elections.
“I will repeat, I don’t want to be called a hypocrite. I admit I am aspiring to become a presidential candidate in 2016. But I must stress that we should talk about these things later. I need to work first,” Binay said at the sidelines of a cyber security forum in Camp Aguinaldo yesterday.
The Vice President said he is backed by members of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) since he is the party’s chairman.
“It (support) follows. After all, I am the chairman of the party,” he said, adding that he has remained with PDP-Laban through its ups and downs.
“If there’s anything, I can take pride in saying I am not a political butterfly,” he said.
During the celebration of PDP-Laban’s 30th anniversary last Sunday, members of the party expressed support for Binay’s plan to run for president in 2016.
Key personalities of PDP-Laban are also optimistic that their party would soon be the ruling party in the Philippines.
Among the PDP-Laban personalities who were present during the celebration were Sen. Koko Pimentel, president of the party; Joey de Venecia III, the party’s national security-general; and party founder former Sen. Aquilino Pimentel.
Meanwhile, Binay brushed aside as rumor the report that defeated vice presidential bet Mar Roxas would benefit from the ouster of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
“For now, let’s place it within the ambit of rumor,” he said. Speculations that the Corona impeachment trial is also aimed to oust Binay were raised after the Chief Justice claimed that he is a stumbling block to someone who was in a hurry to become vice president but had lost in the elections.
Rumors had it that once Corona is ousted, President Aquino would be able to control the Supreme Court, which is also the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) hearing Roxas’ poll protest against Binay.
Roxas, now transportation secretary, has denied Corona’s allegation. Malacañang has also claimed that the poll protest of Roxas and the impeachment trial are not related.
Binay has consistently maintained that he won fairly during the 2010 polls.
“From the start, I said it’s (winning the 2010 election) part of destiny. If there were no automation (of elections), I might have felt nervous. But because of the automation, many doubts had been erased,” he said in a recent interview. Binay, the former running mate of former President Joseph Estrada, claimed he was confident about his chances even during the campaign period.
