Azkals fight for life Sunday
Saturday, July 2, 2011
THE Philippines’ ambitions to go to Brazil for the World Cup in 2014 will be determined on Sunday.
With their backs against the wall, the Philippine football team Azkals will have to fight tooth-and-nail to move past the visiting Sri Lanka Brave Reds before a 13,000-strong crowd at the refurbished Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Gametime is set at 3:30 p.m. with fans from all walks of life expected to converge at the 77-year-old pitch to rally behind the Azkals, still nursing a heavy heart after their harrowing draw (1-1) against the Brave Reds last June 29.
Holding on to a precarious “away” goal in Colombo, the Azkals need at least a scoreless draw to tangle with former Asian leader Kuwait in the next stage of the prestigious tournament slated July 23 and July 28.
The lowly Philippine squad has never entered the second round of the stringent qualifiers as the country tapped relatively more experienced Fil-foreigners to headline the 11-man cast.
They are Nate Burkey, Stephan Schrock, Manuel Ott, and Paul Mulders, who played in the first game of the two-leg series alongside goalie Neil Etheridge, strikers Phil and James Younghusband, captain ball Aly Borromeo.
Completing the team are Chieffy Caligdong, Angel Aldeguer Guirado, Anton del Rosario, and Ian Araneta.
The 25-year-old Burkey scored the crucial header in the 50th minute for the equalizer at 1-1, following a defensive lapse that allowed Chathura Guranarathna’s free kick to break the ice in the 43rd minute.
Last Wednesday’s showing was unexpected after team manager Dan Palami had assured that the booters will score two goals against Sri Lanka, which is 12 notches lower than the Philippines (159) in the latest Fifa World rankings.
It did not materialize though in the unleveled playing field of Sugathadasa Stadium as the team found it difficult to have a passing game on the said pitch.
The Azkals prayed that things will turn to their favor Sunday, considering better surface conditions of the Rizal Memorial and the energy-boosting cheers of the hometown crowd.
The Azkals meteoric rise started in December last year when they barged into the semifinals of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup after overpowering former champion Vietnam and drawing powerhouse Singapore and Myanmar in the group stage.
The team’s unexpected domination over Vietnam even made it as the 10th best football story of 2010 by the prestigious US-based magazine Sports Illustrated.
But opposite eventual runner-up Indonesia, the Azkals were stopped on their tracks in the semis, as the host came through with an aggregate 2-0 score in their two meetings in Jakarta.
Last March, the Azkals made it to the eight-team tournament stage of the Asian Confederation Challenge Cup 2012, a first for any Philippine team. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
