Australian Foreign Minister vows to build 5,000 classrooms

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Friday met with Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, who promised to help improve education in the country by building 5,000 classrooms next year.
Aquino announced the plan of the former Prime Minister of Australia as he apologized for his tardiness during the launching of the diagnostic center of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in Quezon City.
“I asked for your apology for being 30 minutes late and the reason was my meeting with the Foreign Minister of Australia, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd,” Aquino said before reading his prepared speech during the event.
“I took advantage of the opportunity that he is here because talking to him is like talking to Prime Minister (Julia) Gillard of Australia. Our meeting is to further strengthen our ties of the Philippines and Australia,” he added.
Aquino said the Philippines and Australia maintain close relations in fields such as trade, defense, disaster risk management, and education.
“We have so many relations to Australia, especially in the field of diplomacy like in the issue of West Philippine Sea, etcetera,” he noted.
The President related that Rudd has so many insights about China and he also studied to learn Chinese language.
Rudd, former Australian prime minister visited the country Thursday and Friday (October 20- 21). This was his first official visit to the Philippines since he was sworn into office on September 14, 2010.
Rudd’s visit is one of the highlights of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between the Philippines and Australia, which is being commemorated this year.
