August is wettest month due to southwest monsoon
Tuesday, August 2, 2011
AUGUST may prove to be the Philippines’ wettest month, a state weather official said, citing the frequency of rains to be brought by the southwest monsoon.
Graciano Yumul, supervising Undersecretary of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) added that one of the three possible storms that will visit the country in August may hit land.
“As to the track of the upcoming tropical cyclones, there’s a possibility that one will cross Northern Luzon (just like Tropical Storm Juaning),” Yumul told Sun.Star on Tuesday, a day before typhoon “Kabayan” prepares for an exit on Wednesday.
Kabayan (international codename: Muifa) has been in the Philippines since Thursday last week and will reach southern Japan in the next two days.
As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, Pagasa spotted Kabayan at 1,140 kilometers east-northeast of Basco, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 200 kph.
Moving north-northwest at 11 kph, the typhoon is expected to be 990 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes by Wednesday morning, and 170 km southeast of Okinawa, Japan by Thursday morning.
Nonetheless, Kabayan caused inconvenience to residents of Metro Manila and nearby provinces after classes in all levels and work in government offices were suspended due to continuous rains since Monday night.
Plenary sessions at the House of Representatives and the Senate were also called off Tuesday afternoon to allow employees to return safely to their homes in anticipation of heavy traffic. The Supreme Court followed suit.
In Marikina City, at least 31 families or 200 individuals left their homes as the water level in Marikina River reached more than 16 meters, already near the 18-meter level needed for forced evacuation.
This was the city government’s precaution against possible flooding just like what happened during Tropical Storm Ondoy’s onslaught in September 2009 which killed hundreds of people.
Over at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), domestic and international flights remained normal despite the inclement weather.
In separate advisories, the Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Zest Air, and Airphil Express said no flights were cancelled as of this posting Tuesday. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
