Aquino won’t fire ‘bearers of bad news’

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino has no plans of dismissing three officials whom he referred to as “bearers of bad news” and his burdens.

“It’s not a ground to terminate someone based on the fact that he provides bad news. Incompetence would be one but not certainly a bearer of bad news,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing Tuesday.

He clarified that President Aquino is not allergic to bad news since it is part and parcel of his work to receive all kinds of news.

Lacierda remained tight-lipped on who the three officials are.
“I don’t know who he was referring to,” he said.

In his speech during the 113th anniversary of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) last June 23, President Aquino expressed disappointment with three of his Cabinet officials for always giving him bad news instead of solutions to problems their respective department’s are facing. He did not identify the three officials.

Lacierda admitted that he had a meeting with the President when the time he issued the statement.
However, he said the matter was not discussed as the meeting was meant for discussions on the recent flooding in the country.

“No, we had a meeting on the day it was made but we were discussing the flood… We never had the occasion to discuss with the President because the President was following up on the details on the floods all over Metro Manila,” he said.

President Aquino’s remarks drew flak as some viewed his action as “unethical” and “unfair” for his men since it could generate rumors within his departments.
