Aquino: No need to suspend ceasefire with MILF
Thursday, October 20, 2011
THE government will adhere to the ceasefire agreement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) even after a clash in Basilan left 19 soldiers dead.
President Benigno Aquino III made this announcement on Thursday, dismissing the revival of an all-out war with the Moro rebels.
“Are we advocating let’s go all-out war and that redounds an improvement to the situation? I think if you heard my speech earlier, we must learn. No one benefits from war,” the President said in an interview after gracing the 67th commemoration of the Leyte Gulf Landing at MacArthur Memorial Park, Palo, Leyte.
Before making any decisions, it would be prudent to conduct a thorough investigation into the firefight in Sitio Bakisong, Cambug village, Al-Barka town, he said.
“Many questions are needed to be answered. Who’s to blame on this? Who violated the ceasefire? et cetera. When we get all the details, it will tell you which course of direction to take. Jumping into conclusion is irresponsible,” he added.
President Aquino called for a command conference with the secretary of national defense and other military and police officials on Friday at Camp Aguinaldo.
The government peace panel earlier said that the clash will not affect the ongoing peace talks with the MILF. Government peace panel chair Marvic Leonen said the firefight was just “an isolated incident.”
“We are confident that the current mechanisms for monitoring violations of the ceasefire agreement are in place and are effectively working. With the assistance of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as well as the ceasefire committees, we hope to be able to get a clearer picture of the causes of this incident,” Leonen said in a statement.
For its part, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will be filing cases against the rebel group before the International Monitoring Team (IMT) and criminal complains in court. The military denied that the site of encounter was an “area of temporary stay” of the MILF, as claimed by the rebel leaders.
MILF spokesman Von Al Haq, on the other hand, insisted that the government troops were the ones to blame for violating the existing ceasefire by attacking the rebels’ Al-Barka stronghold.
Aquino expressed disappointment over the recent fiasco between the soldiers and Moro rebels.
“I am really not happy with this recent incident and I want to know all the details of the operation…There should have been corrections in placed since the tragedy in Sulu involving Marines,” he said referring to the Abu Sayyaf encounter in Patikul Sulu last July that led to the death of seven Marines and left more than 20 others wounded.
Church supports govt position
Meanwhile, Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad supported the government’s position, saying that the Al-Barka encounter was “isolated.”
“Continue the peace talks and don’t get tired so that peace and harmony will be attained,” said Jumoad in a phone interview.
The bishop said the death of the 19 soldiers, as well as nine fatalities on the other side is another sober moment for the Church.
“It is always painful when fellow Filipinos kill each other,” said Jumoad.
These sentiments were shared by the Akbayan party-list group, which said that it joins the nation in mourning the death of the fatalities.
“We call for sobriety and deeper understanding on this matter,” the organization said. “Although this tragedy must be given swift action, our efforts in winning peace must not be sacrificed. Such a tragedy that has fallen on our soldiers must serve as a reminder of the necessity of pushing for a just and lasting peace in Mindanao.” (Jill Beltran/AMN/Sunnex)
