Aquino leads 26th anniversary of People Power
MANILA (Updated 9:05 a.m.) – President Benigno Aquino III led the 26th anniversary commemoration of the People Power Revolution at the people power monument in Epifanio De Los Santos Avenue (Edsa) on Saturday.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Ano ang iyong Taya Para sa Pilipinas Natin.”
Representatives from different sectors of society joined in the celebration.
Former President Fidel Ramos, Vice President Jejomar Binay, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., among others, also attended the commemoration.
Aquino in his speech Saturday noted the essence of the people power, shared his administration’s reforms, and encouraged the Filipinos to join in the continuous fight for freedom from poverty and corruption, among others.
Aquino proceeded to Rizal Park in Manila to attend the unveiling of the statue of Jaime Cardinal Sin, one of the major figures during the Edsa Revolution in February 1986.
The Aquino administration remains committed to fulfilling the promise of Edsa, Aquino’s deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte earlier said. “This is why we are continuing to work to achieve a country where progress is inclusive, and where justice is dispensed fairly to all,” Valte added.
She also vowed that the Aquino administration will continue to weed out corruption in all sectors of society.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) earlier advised motorists and the general public to bear with traffic inconveniences today, Saturday, as it will closed some parts of the Edsa to make way for the scheduled activities of the 26th anniversary of the 1986 Edsa People Power uprising.
In an advisory posted on its Twitter account, the MMDA said motorists should take alternative routes so as to avoid the expected traffic problem.
On Saturday, the following areas will be closed to traffic: From 12:01 a.m. to 3 p.m. – fourth and fifth lanes of Edsa Northbound from Corinthians Gate to Aguinaldo Gate 4; from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. – Edsa Northbound fully closed from Ortigas towards Santolan northbound; and from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. – White Plains Westbound from Temple Drive towards Edsa.
The alternative routes according to the advisory include Ortigas flyover to San Juan, Ortigas eastbound to C5, Shaw Boulevard eastbound to C5, JP Rizal to Makati and Mandaluyong Bridge, Edsa Kalayaan to C5 and Shaw and Julia Vargas to C5.
Likewise, the advisory said the MMDA may also close the portion from Megamall E-Bay northbound to Main Avenue E-Bay but only if the need arises.
For his part, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said additional traffic enforcers will be deployed along Edsa and the alternate routes.
He added that the agency is also coordinating with the organizers of the EDSA People Power festivities as well as the local government units affected by the alternate routes (Pasig, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati, Quezon City and Cainta) to ensure to ease the expected traffic congestion.
The Edsa anniversary celebration will be capped with a concert in Iligan City featuring original Pilipino music artists who volunteered to perform for the benefit of the victims of the Typhoon Sendong.
They will also honor volunteers coming from different parts of the country who assisted communities affected by the typhoon.
According to the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), the Aquino government wants to strengthen the spirit of volunteerism among Filipinos, the driving force in the peaceful revolt in 1986.
The Edsa People Power Commission has lined up several activities in 26 different venues all over the country for the celebration that will focus on volunteerism, unity and concern in achieving national progress.
