Another witness claims of 2004 poll cheating in Lanao

ANOTHER witness has emerged from hiding, claiming extensive knowledge of the fraud undertaken by the former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to defeat rival Fernando Poe Jr. during the 2004 presidential polls.
Hadji Abdullah Daligdig, Lanao del Sur Chairperson of the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel), showed up at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday and filed an affidavit that said more than a third of the votes in his area were shaved off from Poe to favor Arroyo.
Of the 500,000 votes in Lanao del Sur, more than 200,000 were taken from Poe, Daligdig said in his affidavit, which he filed at the Comelec Law Department after meeting with Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes.
Daligdig said there remains a need to know how Arroyo was able to win over Fernando Poe Jr.
“The truth should prevail. And I think this will show that the past president maybe is a fake president,” said Daligdig. “Hindi nila naiba yung election returns na pinanindigan ko, which I have submitted in the Senate. Pinanindigan ko yan.”
In 2005, Daligdig testified before the Senate about the manipulation of election results in his province. In one testimony, he was even quoted to have said that the May 2004 presidential elections — where Arroyo defeated Poe by a million votes — was the “dirtiest” of all five elections he has monitored in Lanao del Sur.
“I was the only person who never surrendered in the seeking of the truth about the 2004 elections,” he noted.
For his part, Brillantes welcomed Daligdig’s affidavit, saying the information will be presented before the joint probe on the 2004 and 2007 electoral fraud to be conducted by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Comelec.
The affidavit, along with the original election returns (ERs) submitted to DOJ Secretary Leila de Lima by Police Senior Superintendent Rafael Santiago that they stole from the Batasang Pambansa building, could be used by the investigating panel.
Santiago claims he possess authentic ERs they stole and replaced with fake ones so that Arroyo would be assured of the victory over Poe in the event of a recount.
“’I will not be able to speak too much about the details on what happened in Congress. What happened to the ERs. I have the details but I will not speak it out now. These will be the subject of the investigation to be created: the joint committee of Comelec and DOJ,” said Brillantes.
Brillantes, however, admitted that the new claims would be vital in the reinvestigation of the 2004 irregularities. (AMN/Sunnex)
