Angeles City Dialysis Center to open in June

May 31, 2011

ANGELES CITY — The local government unit has slated the launching of the Angeles City Dialysis Center for patients suffering from kidney diseases this June.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan made the announcement as the construction of the new renal care unit at the Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center (RLMMC) — formerly Ospital Ning Angeles — is nearing its final stage.
“We have scheduled June 18 for the inauguration and we are proud to become the first ever local government unit (LGU) to have a dialysis center,” Pamintuan said.
The mayor said the city dialysis center aims to provide quality and cost effective hemodialysis treatment to advance, or end stage renal disease patients through a caring and healing environment that utilizes state-of-the-art equipment.
“Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for people with kidney failure. To accommodate our growing need for dialysis services especially indigent Angeleños, we prioritized this project and even sought the assistance of our good friend and cabalen, George Samson, chief executive officer of the US-based World Medical Relief Inc. (WMRI),” Pamintuan said.
The renal care unit will be equipped with 15 dialysis machines donated to the city by WMRI. It will be operated by three nephrologists, a head nurse, eight staff nurse and four technicians.
“We’re studying how we can better help patients by cutting on the prices of dialysis treatment. We will soon come out with guidelines as to how the center will operate,” Pamintuan added.
He said a patient undergoing a dialysis treatment spends around P5,000 to P7,500 per week and another P2,800 for the dialysis filter.
Dr. Antonio Dizon, director of the RLMMC, said the reverse osmosis for the dialysis machines were already set up.
Dizon also said the Angeles City Water District will work on the installation of a water supply that will be used on the machines.
“Before hemodialysis can be done, water analysis is performed. Water for hemodialysis generally requires reverse osmosis treatment and a “deionizer” for polishing the water,” Dizon said.
The RLMMC façade, nurse station, conference rooms, private wards, out-patient department (OPD) are also being renovated.
Dizon said the new space would provide greater efficiency and effectiveness for both staff and patients.
“We’ve not only grown, the population that we take care of, but over the years, the staff has grown as well,” Dizon said.
“(With the additions), doctors will have not only their offices, but they will have their own exam rooms for primary care physicians, for example. That translates into the ability to serve more people,” Dizon added.
Pamintuan, along with Samson, inspected the dialysis center on Monday.
Samson also turned over 25 laryngoscope and a pulse oximeter to RLMMC. A pulse oximeter is a medical device that indirectly monitors the oxygen saturation of a patient’s blood.
The first batch of medical equipment donated by WMRI that were turned over to RLMMC in January this year, including a C-arm X-ray machine; a cardiac monitoring machine; an ultrasound machine; reverse-osmosis machine for dialysis system; defibrillator and a phaco-machine.
Other items donated by the WMRI include dialysis chairs, hospital beds and mattress, walkers, crutches and medical supplies such as gauze sponges and under pads, among others.
