Alain Péréault (Sieur d’Arques, Limoux) : “There’s a time for Crémant and a time for Champagne.” (Nov 23, 2009)

Clark Wine Center is pleased to relay interesting news and articles about wine to you on this web site.  We hope that this will enhance your wine shopping experience when you visit this wine shop in Pampanga Clark Freeport Zone.

After having worked for La Martiniquaise and the Catalan company Freixenet, nine months ago Alain Péréault joined Sieur d’Arques in Limoux as their new marketing director. Asked whether he thought that the economic crisis had changed the stakes in the competition between crémants and champagnes, he was of the opinion that both types of wine had their own niche : “What all sparkling wines have in common are the bubbles. The new generation of consumers have been drinking soda since they were born – that is, cold, sparkling drinks. The American-style fridge is the most important piece of furniture in the house, which also explains the current fashion for rosé. Today, we serve everything chilled – we have a “chilled culture”! And when this generation moves on from non-alcoholic drinks, they will naturally be drinking sparkling wine.

In France, crémant just works, no matter the region. The first wave of consumers tended to buy crémant as a champagne substitute, but now it has a real market in its own right. Instead of being a poor relation to champagne, it is now seen as a separate proposition and is associated with its own special occasions. There are times when champagne is perfect : a candlelit dinner, for example, wouldn’t be complete without it. Crémant, on the other hand, is ideal for convivial and generous occasions. With a bottle that costs 7 or 8 euros, you can afford to be lavish. When you’re drinking a 30 euro bottle of champagne, you might hesitate to open a second bottle – although at that price, there’s no need to ask whether everyone wants some more!”
