Agri department holds mosaic-making contest

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – In line with the celebration of the World Food Day on October 16, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Office 3 is inviting all public and private primary pupils to join in their on-the-stop mosaic making contest.

The contest is per school, district, division and regional levels competition which will run for the whole month of September.

“Winners in the school level will then compete in the district level, followed by division, and regional, and those who won in the regional will contend in the national contest slated on October 11 in Quezon City,” said DA Information Officer June Espiritu.

Seventeen regional participants will be selected from the winners of the elimination rounds of the said four levels and will be vying for the best mosaic poster wherein five will be declared as winners.

Winners in the national contest will each receive a cash prize of P15,000 from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, trophy, and plaque, both from DA.

Also, these winning mosaics shall be displayed at the DA, Department of Education (DepEd) and FAO offices and be used as designs for the 2013 Christmas cards, said Espiritu.

This contest is open to all Grades IV to VI elementary pupils and not older than 12 years old and certified by the school principal as officially enrolled in any public and DepEd accredited private elementary schools nationwide.

Materials that will be used here include an illustration board sized 20” x 30”, any art medium except oil and water color, and a combination of agricultural and fishery products–could be palay grains, mongo, squash seeds, corn kernels or husks, sea shells or dried seaweed.

The theme for the said poster is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition” which, according to FAO, gives focus to World Food Day observances and helps increase understanding of problems and solutions in the drive to end hunger.

The event is in partnership of the DepEd, in coordination with the DA’s Regional Information Officers (RIOCs).
