Aetas get cash grant

SAN MARCELINO, Zambales — Some 500 Aeta families had a taste of what hi-tech means after receiving their cash grants via Automated Teller Machine (ATM).
San Marcelino Mayor Jose Rodriquez said the giving of cash grants is part of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program of the National Government.

He said it was the first time that Aetas in the area used ATM machines.
“Part of the strategy of the program is to train the beneficiaries with something that they don’t traditionally do like the use of ATM cards, which is a good start in developing the learning of the indigenous people,” he said.
Rodriquez also explained to the staff of the Department of Social Welfare and Development to be patient in handling the Aetas since this is new for them.
The program provides cash grants to encourage Aetas to send their children to school and to take care of their health through regular check-ups and complete vaccinations.
The program also facilitates activities, which will provide them access to trends and encourage them to avail of modern day advancements to better their lives.
San Marcelino is one of the 41 cities and municipalities covered by Pantawid Pamilya in Central Luzon. The beneficiaries are all Aetas from four barangays located in the distant mountainous areas.
Under the program, a household/beneficiary is entitled to P6,000 a year or 500 per month for health expenses and P300 per month for children’s education. (Anthony Bayarong)
