About wines of Jurançon, France

Jurancon Wine
Jurancon is an historic appellation for white wines from an area south-west of the town of Pau, in the far south-west of France. It was one of the country’s first wine appellations, and takes its name from the parish of Jurancon, which is now a suburb of Pau.
Jurancon wine can take three forms: AOC Jurancon, AOC Jurancon Sec and AOC Jurancon Vendanges Tardives.
Plain Jurancon wines may be made from the grape varieties Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Courbu, Camaralet and Lauzet, of which the last two together may only comprise up to 15% of the final blend. The grapes must not be harvested until they contain 187 grams of sugar, which must translate to residual sugar levels of a minimum of 35 grams per liter in the final wine. The lighter of these wines would be better compared to the style of Vouvray than Sauternes or Monbazillac, as they are higher in acidity, and offer notes of crystallised fruits and fresh mango rather than honey and biscuits.
Jurancon Sec wine may be made from the same varieties as plain Jurancon, without the restrictions on the percentages of Courbu and Camaralet. Chaptalization is permitted in colder vintages, but only to a limited extent, and the standard parameter is that the grapes must not be harvested until they contain 212 grams of sugar. The finished wines must have a residual sugar level of no more than 4 grams per liter. These wines are fresh on the palate, and characterized by notes of white flowers and ripe tropical fruit.
Wines made in a sweeter style, and made from grapes with a high level of natural sugar are covered by the Jurancon Vendanges Tardives title.
The climate here is moderated to some extent by the Atlantic Ocean, and is made warmer and drier (particularly around harvest time) by the effects of the Pyrenean Fohn winds. The region receives an average of 1200mm of rain per year.
The soils of the area are largely alluvial (clay and sand), being located between the rivers Gave d’Oloron and Gave de Pau, but there is also limestone to be found at higher elevations. The soil type known as ‘poudingue’ is characterized by round stones of sedimentary rock, and take their name from the old English fruit ‘pudding’, which they resemble in shape and weight.
A number of plots of land (or parcelles in French) were excluded from the appellation in 2004. They may still claim the appellation title until the harvest of 2024.
