31-day lack of water ‘not true’
THE Cagayan de Oro Water District (Cowd) refuted the statement of its board chairperson that lack of water in the city will last for one month.
In a notice posted on its Facebook page, the Cowd said the statement is not true.
“As soon as the production well is fixed, Cowd will make it operational. We will not wait until next month,” the statement said.
Earlier, Cowd chairperson of the board Joel Baldelovar said Tropical Storm Sendong destroyed the district’s water boosters.
The water pipes of Rio Verde Corp. connecting to the Cowd’s main pipe were also destroyed.
Baldelovar said repairs of the damaged pipes will take at least 31 days.
However, Ladele Sagrado, division manager of the water district, said the damaged pipes of Rio Verde resulted in a shortage of only about 70 to 80 percent of water supply in the city.
Sagrado said the production wells in Barangays Tablon, Agusan and Bugo remain operational.
The Cowd said all efforts to restore the damaged facilities to normal operating condition are being exerted.
It said in the next 31 days, it will be doing cleaning of collector wells, rehabilitation of electric motors, testing and rehabilitation of transformers, rehabilitation of motor controllers, disinfection of six production wells, and testing and commissioning of facilities.
The Cowd has reportedly utilized all means to supply water to its concessionaries and sought the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and private individuals and groups with fire trucks to assist in distributing water by allowing them free access to hydrants along the highway from Lapasan to Bugo.
Sagrado said a cluster of public faucets have also been installed beside the fire hydrants to allow concessionaires easy access to water.
However, she said since their laboratory is among the facilities that have been totally damaged and rendered them incapable of monitoring the level of residual chlorine in their distribution lines, the agency is strongly advising the public to boil the water before drinking for their own safety and protection.
“These events are fortuitous and totally beyond our control. Nevertheless, we would like to assure the public that Cowd is doing everything in its capacity to restore normal supply operations the soonest possible time. We are calling for sobriety and patience in this time of crisis,” the water district said.
Related to this, the City Council passed and approved Monday a resolution asking water companies to allow the City Government to have access in their wells.
The move came in support to City Councilor Alvin Calingin’s proposal after learning that it would take a month for Cowd to fix its damaged pumping stations.
“If they refuse, then the City Government will exercise extreme police power to take over its wells only for the duration that water supply is badly needed,” Calingin told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Calingin said the city must now take action when it comes to water since it is the main problem of the people in the city.
Earlier, Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said the councilors are planning to recommend the takeover of pumping stations in the city such as Nature Spring by Cowd since the city is in a state of calamity.
Because of this, the City Council created an ad hoc panel composed of the committees on public utilities and the police, fire and public safety to negotiate with the water companies.
During his visit in Cagayan de Oro on Tuesday, President Benigno Aquino also ordered local officials and the Department of Public Works and Highways to assist the Cowd in finding ways to be able to restore water supply in the city as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Cowd said starting Monday, the fire hydrants located across Capitol University Medical City and at the entrance of Capistrano Complex in Barangay Gusa will be for the exclusive use of fire trucks only.
Sagrado said the hydrant near KSY in Barangay Carmen will be closed since collecting water from it has caused traffic problem in the area.
