3 Filipinos injured in ill-fated cruise ship

MANILA – Some 300 Filipinos were rescued from a cruise ship that ran aground near Giglio Island in Italy Friday night, the Foreign Affairs department said.
The Philippine Embassy in Rome reported that three of the rescued Filipinos were confined due to injuries suffered in the accident.
“At least three Filipino crew members were reported confined in a hospital, located in Grosseto, for injuries due to bad shake/fall from decks,” said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), citing report of Philippine Ambassador Virgilio A. Reyes Jr.
Reyes said the Filipinos are generally safe. Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said one of the three suffered from hypothermia, while the other one had a broken arm.
The Costa cruise ship Concordia ran aground on Friday shortly after departing from Civitavecchia on a seven-day Mediterranean cruise and has since tipped on its side triggering a call to abandon ship.
Around 4,000 people are onboard the ship, including some 1,000 crew members.
The passengers and the Filipino crew members are temporarily housed in a church, in hotels and in schools at the port of Giglio Island, while many have already been transported to the mainland.
The DFA said Reyes had already dispatched a seven-man Embassy Emergency Response Team to evaluate the situation on the ground and to provide the necessary assistance to the rescued Filipinos.
Firefighters worked Sunday to rescue a crew member with a suspected broken leg from the overturned hulk of the luxury cruise liner Costa Concordia, 36 hours after it ran aground. More than 40 people are still unaccounted for.
Three people are confirmed dead after the huge cruise ship carrying more than 4,200 people ran aground Friday night.
Police divers and rescue crews circled Sunday around the wreckage of ship off the coast of the island of Giglio. Crews in dinghies were touching the hull with their hands, near the site of the 160-foot-long (50-meter-long) gash where water flooded in and caused the ship to fall on its side.
Coast guard officials have said divers will try to enter the belly of the ship in case anyone is still inside.
Coast guard spokesman Captain Filippo Marini told Sky Italia TV that Coast Guard divers have recovered the so-called “black box” with the recording of the navigational details from a compartment now under water.
Many passengers complained the crew didn’t give them good directions on how to evacuate and once the emergency became clear, delayed lowering the lifeboats until the ship was listing too heavily for many to be released.
Several other passengers said crew members told passengers for 45 minutes that there was a simple “technical problem” that had caused the lights to go off.
Passengers said they had never participated in an evacuation drill, although one had been scheduled for Saturday. The cruise began on January 7. (AMN/AP/Sunnex)
