2 teens in Pampanga mall shooting die
September 22, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO (Updated) — The two boys involved in a shooting incident inside the SM Pampanga mall on Tuesday were pronounced dead Wednesday, according to television reports.
The 16-year-old victim died late Wednesday night few hours after doctors removed the life support tube from the 13-year-old suspect upon the consent of his family.
Television report said the suspect died at 3 p.m. while his victim died around 11 p.m. The suspect’s family plan to donate his kidney and cornea to the Philippine Kidney Institute and Eye Bank, respectively.
The two boys, who allegedly had developed a romantic affair through the social networking site Facebook, were declared brain dead hours after they reached hospital on Tuesday.
The suspect who hails from Olongapo City took his own life after shooting the older boy, inside the SM Pampanga mall around 11:50 a.m. Tuesday.
Police ruled that Tuesday’s shooting incident was a “crime of passion,” as they found a suicide note written on the victim’s shirt. The note read, “Paulo, hindi mo sya mapapakinabangan. Handa na akong mamatay makasama ko lang si ‘Jonas’ (Paulo, he can’t be yours. I am now ready to die just to be with Jonas).” Police have failed to establish the identity of Paulo.
After the shooting incident, the two were rushed to the San Fernandino Hospital in this city, but the victim was later transferred to the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Medical Center in Maimpis village.
Friends of both the suspect and the victim extend their condolences through Facebook, where the suspect posted a message that he was committing suicide.
The incident in SM Pampanga Tuesday was the third such incident to happen in the country’s biggest mall operator in recent weeks.
Last September 14, Sheila Macapugay shot and killed her husband, Abel, who was working as a sales clerk at SM North Edsa in Quezon City. She accidentally shot dead security guard Ricardo Inamac when the latter tried to stop her from committing suicide.
Infidelity was the cause of last week’s incident, police said. The female security guard assigned at the mall entrance where the suspect passed has been relieved from her post.
On July 29, a security guard was killed in a shootout involving a Games and Amusement Board employee inside the restroom of SM Delgado Mall in Iloilo City.
Meanwhile, Malacañang on Wednesday urged mall owners to implement stricter security measures following series of shooting incidents inside malls.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, in a press briefing, said security personnel should be stricter in inspection of bags and frisking of bodies to avert entry of firearms and other forms of deadly weapons inside malls.
“It’s a concern for the public that we see security agencies, security personnel frisking us and it turns out guns are still able to enter the mall premises,” he said. (With Jill Beltran/Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
