Arroyo told to answer accusations

MANILA — Malacanang advised anew former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to face the charges leveled against her.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte made the call in light of former Maguindanao poll officer Lintang Bedol’s revelations that Arroyo orchestrated the alleged rampant cheating, which benefitted then Bukidnon Representative Juan Miguel Zubiri, whose narrow win over former opposition bet Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III is currently in protest.
“We respect her silence with regard to these new developments. Maybe, she’s still consulting her lawyers. However, we want to reiterate that she should answer the allegations against her. The public deserves to know the truth,” Valte said over state-run Radyo ng Bayan.
Bedol surfaced early this week after years of hiding to corroborate the earlier statement of Zaldy Ampatuan, the suspended Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao governor who claimed that 2007 poll fraud operations took place in Maguindanao province.
He confirmed in a television interview on Thursday that vote-padding and vote-shaving took place in Maguindanao, and it was Arroyo who masterminded the election fraud.
Bedol said Arroyo ordered to give zero votes to three opposition senatorial candidates — Benigno Aquino III, Allan Peter Cayetano, and Panfilo Lacson. He added that all election documents used in Maguindanao were fake.
Bedol was accused of manipulating election results that later gave the reportedly statistically improbable 12-0 victory of the administration’s Team Unity, as well as the zero votes received by 18 senatorial bets in Maguindanao back in the 2007 midterm polls.
Snubbed
Arroyo, who arrived from his Europe trip at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 on board KLM flight at 8:49 a.m. Saturday, kept mum on the issues against her.
The incumbent Pampanga lawmaker, accompanied by her husband Jose Miguel, snubbed the media during her arrival as she designated lawyer Raul Lambino to speak in her behalf.
On Friday, Lambino surmised that President Benigno Aquino III is trying to earn brownie points from the public once more by floating controversies supposedly involving Arroyo and her former appointees.
Aquino will deliver his second State of the Nation Address (Sona) on July 25, as Lambino saw the negative reports on Arroyo as part of the Palace-backed design to malign his client.
But Valte said, “A single Sona will not make or unmake the president. It’s the president’s performance that will define his term.”
The Malacanang official also brushed aside accusations that the ultimate goal of various exposes against Arroyo was to bring her to jail.
“If we had wanted to jail your client, if we were only after revenge, we should have done so earlier. We could have filed trumped-up charges for PR. The point is, Arroyo is not our objective, but the ends of justice,” Valte stressed.
Fund misuse
Besides the poll-rigging incidents in Maguindanao, critics of the previous administration chided Arroyo for allowing the misuse of funds at the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).
