11,000 Tarlac farmers get assistance

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Around 11,000 farmers affected by Tropical Storm “Falcon” in Tarlac province are set to benefit from the P1.5 million worth of certified seeds assistance from the Department of Agriculture (DA).
DA Regional Director Andrew Villacorta personally handed “certificates of assistance guarantee” to the officials of the province’s 16 municipalities, including those that declared a state of calamity, namely: Camiling, Concepcion, La Paz, San Clemente and Paniqui, for the implementation of the grant.
Villacorta said a total of 13,336 cavans of seeds will be distributed wherein severely affected farmers will have it for free while partially affected ones will only pay half of the price.
He also said that La Paz will get the biggest share in the assistance since it was the most hardly hit area with 2,636 cavans for 1,979 farmers.
La Paz town serves as the catch basin of water coming from the Chico River and Pantabangan dam.
Figures from DA and the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist show that total agricultural damages from last month’s storm in Tarlac reached P136 million with more than 13,000 hectares of farmlands battered.
