Zaldy Ampatuan spends overnight in hospital

MANILA — Massacre suspect Rizaldy “Zaldy” Ampatuan spent overnight at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City Wednesday as his health condition was unstable.
Cardiologists have advised that Ampatuan needed to spend the night at the PHC as he must undergo an angiogram Thursday to check the flow of blood to his heart, hospital director Dr. Manuel Chuachiaco said.
Angiography is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside of blood vessels and organs of the body, particularly the arteries, veins and the heart chambers.
Chuachiaco said cardiologists have warned that the suspended governor of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) could suffer a heart attack if he fails to undergo additional tests.
“If the doctor says that it is the true situation, then he will undergo angioplasty,” he said, adding Ampatuan is under the care of Dr. Danny Quizon at the Coronary Care Unit.
Angioplasty is the technique of mechanically widening a narrow or obstructed blood vessel.
Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 221 Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes specifically stated in an earlier order allowing Ampatuan to undergo medical checkup that the suspended Armm governor is an out-patient, meaning he could not stay overnight in the hospital.
Solis-Reyes, however, approved Wednesday Ampatuan’s overnight stay at the hospital.
Ampatuan’s check-up at the government-run hospital came after Judge Solis-Reyes amended her earlier order following the refusal of the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Global City in Taguig City to admit Ampatuan citing security concerns.
The court order was based on the findings of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-National Capital Region (NCR) Health Service Director Agnes Aglipay who recommended that Ampatuan must be treated in a “hospital setting.”
Ampatuan has been complaining of shortness of breathing and experiencing fluctuating sugar level. In her recommendation, Aglipay said this is only relieved by nebulation and the installation of oxygen.
Aglipay also recommended that Ampatuan should undergo peripheral arterial and venous duplex scam, endothelial function test, blood chemistry, which includes myocardial perfusion imaging, 12-lead ECG and 24-hour Holter monitoring and carotid duplex scan.
Ampatuan’s camp said he was both hypertensive and insulin dependent since 2001 as he was suffering from diabetes.
Opposition
Sought for comment, private prosecutor Harry Roque said they will oppose any stay of Ampatuan at the PHC beyond the time specified in the court order.
“We will definitely oppose it. We should remember that Andal Ampatuan Sr. planned and had hospital arrest as testified to by one of our witness, Lakmodin Saliao. We will not allow Zaldy to do the same,” said Roque, who is serving as the counsel of 15 of the 57 victims of the November 23, 2009 Maguindanao massacre where the former governor and several family members are suspects.
Roque was referring to the testimony of Saliao, a long-time household helper of the Ampatuans, that Andal Sr. feigned an illness to be confined at a Davao city hospital to evade the authorities following the imposition of martial law in Maguindanao in the aftermath of the massacre.
Last month, Andal Sr. also requested the court to allow him to undergo regular medical check-up as he claimed he was suffering from diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension and external hemorrhoids, aside from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
No hand
MalacaƱang was quick to deny Wednesday any hand on the decision of a court allowing Ampatuan to undergo medical check-up at the state-run hospital.
“It is beyond the executive branch. The fact that he was able to go to hospital would imply that he was able to secure an approval from the court to do so,” presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.
“There was an assessment from the court. The judge assessed and appreciated whatever petition they had,” he added.
Lacierda said the decision of the judge is “interlocutory”, which means it could still be appealed.
He, meanwhile, refused to comment on whether Ampatuan really needs medical attention or not.
“I really don’t know it would be unfair for me to render judgment or to show any sentiment on the matter because the judge is on the better position to do so. We would rely on the discretion of the judge and the basis why she granted that particular leave,” he said.
Ampatuan is one of the principal accused in the grisly carnage.
He earlier said that he is willing to testify against his relatives in relation to the massacre. He also accused former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of masterminding widespread poll cheating in 2004 and 2007.
The government is currently assessing the testimonies of Ampatuan. (With AH/Sunnex)
