A regular and moderate consumption of wine helps keeping up with a slim figure. These are the findings of a study conducted by American experts from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston with 20 000 women. The researchers followed these American women aged over 39 years, by carefully monitoring their eating habits. They then monitored their weight over the next 13 years.

All these women tended to gain weight, but those who have put on least weight are those who have been drinking wine in moderation: one to two drinks per day. The study authors noted that all alcoholic drinks are not equally effective to prevent a gain of weight, beer and spirits having a smaller counter-effect than wine. One hypothesis for this beneficial effect of wine on weight gain is that the liver develops a specific method to eliminate alcohol when it comes from wine, this method consuming a lot of calories. So for a glass of red wine (about 120 calories), most of these calories will be consumed during the digestion-process of alcohol by the liver, whereas the same amount of calories contained in a pizza will cost less calories to digest and a larger part will be converted into fat.
