‘Who’s cheated?’, HAU management names employees’ benefits

ANGELES CITY–In light of the ongoing strike of its employees, the Holy Angel University (HAU) management denied cheating on its employees as it enumerated more than 20 benefits being received by its workers.

In a statement, the HAU management listed the following benefits the striking regular faculty and employees are already receiving: (1) 95 percent tuition fee discount in college and graduate school for faculty/employees, their husband/wife and four children; 90 percent tuition fee discount in high school for children; (2) health/hospitalization insurance for faculty/employee plus two dependents (spouse/child/parent), i.e. P100,000 maximum coverage per illness per year per insured member/dependent; (3) full-month Christmas bonus on top of 13th month pay; (4) full two-month vacation pay (April and May) on top of their salary for summer teaching load, which means those who teach in summer still get a teaching pay on top of the two-month vacation pay (one-month vacation pay for regular faculty on their 3rd year of teaching and two-month vacation pay starting their 4th year of teaching) and (5) full-month summer incentive pay for non-teaching personnel on top of their two-month salaries for April and May in their 3rd year of permanency (50 percent of monthly salary in 1st year of permanency; 75 percent in second year of permanency).

HAU employee benefits also include (6) P400 and P500 monthly rice subsidy for first four years and fifth year and thereafter of service, respectively; (7) mandatory retirement benefit equivalent to one month salary multiplied by the total number of years of service; optional retirement (at least 20 years of service) benefit equivalent to 60 percent of monthly salary multiplied by the total number of years of service and a bereavement benefit of P7000, including five days bereavement leave with pay.

Other benefits include death benefit of P40,000; uniform allowance; service award; welcome gift for newborn baby; birthday gift and Foundation Day bonus.

In addition to these, the HAU management also listed 10 school days sick leave with full pay for faculty, 15 working days sick leave with full pay for non-teaching personnel; vacation leave of 15 working days with full pay for non-teaching personnel; maternity and/or paternity leave with full pay; paternity leave and study leave with full pay for faculty (subject to approval of the President).

The HAU management said benefits of employees also include a thesis grant of P15,000 maximum; dissertation grant of P30,000 maximum; one-time tuition fee assistance of P10,000 for faculty enrolled in Manila; deloading of six to nine units with pay for one semester for faculty undertaking research (subject to approval of the President) and study loan of P10,000 and P20,000 for graduate studies and board review, respectively.

The management said they also provide their employees with a life insurance of P100,000 for faculty and non-teaching personnel; accident insurance and other government-administered benefits like SSS, Philhealth insurance, ECC, PAG-IBIG fund, etc.

Given these benefits, the HAU management said, they were “deeply offended” by the accusation that their striking employees and faculty are underpaid and even cheated.

“We have always complied with the requirements of the law, and all the benefits have been successfully negotiated with past union officers. We take pride in our competitive salaries and benefits which is the reason our faculty applied to us in the first place,” the HAU management said.
HAU management’s statement came out after more than 300 members of the HAU Teachers and Employees Union (HAUTEU) waged a strike that has pursued for more than two weeks now.

According to HAUTEU representatives, the strike stemmed from the refusal of the school’s management to resolve issues of their collective bargaining agreement.
