Vineyard production in the West of France should not be adversely affected by Storm Xinthia (Apr 02, 2010)
Clark Wine Center is pleased to relay interesting news and articles about wine to you on this web site. We hope that this will enhance your wine shopping experience when you visit this wine shop in Pampanga Clark Freeport Zone.
Overall, the official report on Storm Xinthia is said to give less cause for alarm for the French Atlantic coast wine regions than first feared. The wind did not affect the wine regions, where more harm to wine was done by seawater flooding in coastal vineyards. This flooding is of concern as it leaves salt in the soil, but chamber of agriculture assessors expect that a fast withdrawal of water will limit the amount of residual salt in the vineyards to a benign level.
In the Vendée area, “No real damage to wine has been done”, said Hubert Macquineau, President of the local wine union, the “Syndicat des vignerons des fiefs vendéen”, an observation corroborated by the “Interprofession de la Loire” for the Touraine wine region.
In the Charente-Maritime area, damage in the Cognac vineyards should be limited to the inland areas but the Iles de Ré and d’Oléron vineyards were hit: around a hundred of the Ile de Ré’s 630 hectares found themselves submerged due to a dam burst that cut the island in two.
In the Gironde area, the vineyards on the edge of the river estuary were also covered by water, between Soulac and Macau in the Médoc and, on the opposite bank, between Saint-André de Cubzac and Saint-Ciers sur Gironde, on both sides of Bourg and Blaye.
