Village chief warns ‘kaingeros’
Friday, December 17, 2010
ARAYAT — San Juan Baño village chief Luisito Portacio on Wednesday warned illegal loggers and “kaingeros” (slash-and-burn farmers) who enrich themselves at the expense of Mt. Arayat here.
This came after Governor Lilia Pineda requested earlier the residents as well as village officials to exert extra efforts to curb illegal activities that lead to the exploitation of the mountain.
“Mawagan kupu kekayu. Ibie yune mupung Pamasko kanaku ini. Sana luguran ye ing bundok Arayat. Maswelu kayu pu uling atin kayung asna kasanting a bundok na pweding mamye kabyayan king balang metung kekayu keni (I call on you. Please give this as a Christmas gift: that you love and take care of Mt. Arayat. You are fortunate to have such a beautiful mountain that can be your source of livelihood),” Pineda said.
As this developed, Portacio said that they will not tolerate illegal loggers and kaingeros who operate within Mt. Arayat.
“Nung kanitang mengalabas paburen dala, ngeni wawarningan kula reng mamutot punu at mangarbon uling kayabe na kaming magbante (If in the past they were tolerated, now we will not allow the cutting of trees and charcoal making as we would be on guard), Portacio stressed.
The village chief also told Pineda that he will be closely working with the 703rd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army for joint monitoring in the mountain.
Portacio, meanwhile, admitted that some of his constituents were kaingeros whose subsistence depends on charcoal. However, he said, they are now thinking of an alternative livelihood program for them. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
