Typhoons leave P8-B crop damages in Central Luzon
Friday, October 7, 2011a
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The damages of Typhoons Pedring and Quiel on palay crops in Central Luzon reached P8,442,837,965, the Agriculture department said.
Department of Agriculture (DA) regional director Andrew Villacorta said the region lost some 614,438.08 metric tons of palay crops. The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics is yet to verify the report.
The report also showed that 285,175.92 hectares of rice paddies have been inundated, affecting 346,317 farmers in seven provinces of the region.
The provinces of Bulacan, Nueva Ecija and Pampanga ranked among the provinces with the most number of damages to palay crops.
Bulacan sustained damages of P2,015,746,139.95 and Nueva Ecija province suffered the most damage with P3,700,966,792, as of this posting Thursday. In Nueva Ecija, 237,183 farmers are still affected by the flooding.
Pampanga also sustained some P1,283,426,600 worth of damages to palay crops; 29,014.50 hectares of rice paddies have been flooded in Candaba, San Simon and Apalit towns, among others, with 18,350 farmers affected.
Villacorta said a P235,567,800 rehabilitation plan is now underway for farmers of the region. Of this, a total of P206,412,600 is intended for rice rehabilitation works.
Some P1,392,000 is also set for rehabilitation works for corn; P2,432,000 for high value crops; P4,070,000 for the livestock sector; and some P21,261,200 for the fisheries sector.
Some 12,657 hectares corn crops have been affected by the typhoons and an initial of P155,934,340 worth of damages were reported on livestock and other poultry products in the region.
Villacorta said 988,000 metric tons of palay is to be harvested this cropping season from lands spared from flooding.
Central Luzon produces an average of 3 million metric tons of palay for two cropping seasons: 1.6 million is produced during the wet cropping season and another 1.4 during the dry cropping season.
Villacorta said the National Food Authority stocks of 135,000 metric tons will augment the remaining harvest.
The inventory industry stocks of 70 thousand metric tons and household stocks of 55 thousand metric tons will also augment the supply lost for the current cropping season, he added.
“The fears of rice shortage are unfounded, as we have enough stocks available,” Villacorta said.
The DA is coming up with a master list of affected farmers who will avail themselves of rice subsidies and assistance from crop insurance.
Hybrid and certified palay seed subsidy of P1,200 will be given per hectare of totally damaged rice paddies and P600 subsidy per hectare of partially damaged palay. A P2,000 subsidy will also be given per hectare of totally damaged corn and P1,000 per hectare subsidy for partially damaged corn.
Villacorta said the DA will also be facilitating the distribution of drugs and biologics for livestock, dispersal of goats, piglets and free range chickens, distribution of fish fingerlings to respective sectors affected by the flooding.
