Tulabut: Sale and promos
May 14, 2011
COMING from the US, I could not help but struggle to free myself from looking for sale items – from shirt, shoes, bags, electronics and what-have-you.
In almost all of the stores I went to (Kohl’s, Macy’s, Old Navy, Modells, Best Buy, etc), I would always find a corner where there are “clearance items” where discounts could go as high as 80 percent off the original price.
And if you are lucky enough to have discount coupons (that are mailed or cut from magazines), the sale items could almost end up free. There was a time that I and my host ended up having a bigger amount in discounts than what we actually paid the store as my host paid with compiled coupons on a designated sale day.
Just to give you an example, a chronograph Bulova men’s watch was tagged at $489 as its original price. We ended up paying just $189 after all the discounts. While I may not be good at Math, I think that tells me that I had 300 bucks off.
As it happened, I kidded my host that “someday soon, the store will end up paying us to shop in their place.”
Here at home, I am trying to wake up from that “dream”. It’s all different where so-called “sale” are mere discounts from already jacked-up prices.
In communications and electronics, there are free items, too. Take for example the calls from cellphones. All networks in the US do not charge any tolls for domestic calls (US and Canada numbers) made from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m., and during weekends too.
In the Philippines, that might just be possible given the merger of Sun Cellular with Smart Communications. One may recall that Digitel was effectively bought by PLDT only recently. The wireless backbones of these two telco giants happen to be Sun and Smart, respectively.
Already, Sun subscribers enjoy unlimited text and calls within the same network. And with that, and with Smart’s solid 46 million subscribers, I think that offering the same UNLIs (text and calls) to the now-conjoined clientele is a good move.
I am predicting that given the merger and the growing subscriber base (plus the never-ending attractive promos that are being offered by the two telcos) that Smart and Sun would be offering soon the most attractive cellphone plans and packages not only in the Philippines but probably in the whole of Asia.
Imagine having to call and text for free friends and loved ones at any given time if within these same networks. Or picture calling anyone with other network providers (Globe and TM) for free too in not-so-holy hours and weekends.
If either Smart or Sun would offer the latter, then I would be encouraging people to move to them as that looks to be more economical and practical. Never mind the 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.; that would still serve us a lot of good. One must remember that it is in these hours where a lot of calls could take place (teenagers courting, kumpadres dealing, kumadres chit-chatting etc).
And it may never end up with unlimited calls and texts. There are also freebies like smartphones, personal computers and other perks.
Again, take for example the latest offering by Sun Cellular where it offers a very good Android Phone (Samsung Galaxy Mini) at only P999 monthly subscription. You see, Androids are the in-thing now when it comes to cellphone units as they offer tens of thousands of free applications.
Of course, it is a given that Smart too has always pioneered (and sustained) attractive promos. It has in its fold other Androids too like Galaxy Tab (a tough competitor for iPad) which is still being offered at plan P2,000 with unlimited data usage (it means unlimited web browsing) at no additional costs. It is also Smart that only has the other chic and dependable Androids like Samsung Galaxy Ace (which has been compared with iPhone 4) and Sony Ericsson Experia Arc. Should one opt for non-Androids, top of the line Symbians and Windows Mobile 7 units are also available like the Nokia N8, E7 and the HTC Mozart. Not to be left out are Blackberry units which Smart also offers on reasonable plans.

Talk about sale and promos, Cebu Pacific has outstanding promos or seat sales every so often.
Every now and then, it offers very low ticket prices from Clark to Macau, Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong. Believe you me, tickets to these destinations could go as low as P799.
There is a catch though. It means that one has to be on alert for those seat sales by monitoring their announcements through newspapers and the internet. But that should not be a problem, especially in this Facebook age where almost every web browser is glued to the computers.
Cebu Pacific also has reasonably priced (READ: REALLY LOW) domestic routes like the Clark-Cebu-Clark flights. This is no wonder why the Asia’s first budget carrier has had more than 1 million passengers for the month of April, a first for any local airline.
The airline flew 1,086,650 passengers on both domestic and international routes in April 2011. The airline operates to 33 domestic and 16 international destinations, on 52 domestic and 24 international routes.
It also broke its own record for the number of passengers carried in one day. Last April 29, 2011, Cebu Pacific carried 37,835 in one day, overtaking previous records in the first quarter of 2011.
Wow, this airline just knows how to keep its passengers flying – happily flying at that.
*****
Talk about sale and promos too, the Macau Package sale at SM Clark is still ongoing. I must remind our readers though that it will end tomorrow, May 15. So hurry and get the best tour packages from participating airlines and travel agencies.
Macau is such a great place with its family-oriented destinations. I must tell you that it is not only for gaming and for casinos. There is a thousand and one more attractions for ate, kuya, lolo, lola, everyone.
If one has to avail of the sale packages, consider the one that would fly you to Macau via Cebu Pacific Air. It’s more reliable, convenient and hassle-free.
