Probe on immigration officers deploying Pinoys to Syria gets boost

DISMISSAL from service will be slapped on immigration officers found liable of facilitating the departure of undocumented overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Syria despite a government ban.
Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. said they are supporting the investigation of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) on immigration officers allegedly responsible for allowing the OFWs to go to the strife-torn nation.
“We assure the public that this bureau under my watch will not tolerate these shenanigans. Employees who connive with human traffickers and illegal recruiters will be dismissed from the service,” he said.
Earlier, Vice President and IACAT chair Jejomar Binay disclosed that 14 BI personnel at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were issued show-cause orders for not enforcing the deployment ban to Syria.
He noted that it was the BI that provided the IACAT with the names of BI personnel whose departure stamps were found on the passports of OFWs repatriated from Syria.
The bureau’s anti-fraud division certified the stamps as genuine.
Meanwhile, David said the BI’s anti-corruption drive at the country’s main gateway has been intensified with the periodic rotation in assignments of immigration officers and the recall of several employees who have derogatory records or are subjects of administrative complaints.
Last year, David fired 19 immigration officers allegedly involved in human trafficking at the Clark airport in Pampanga.
Also on Sunday, recruitment experts called on the Philippine government to seek help from their counterparts in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a bid to stop illegal deployment of Filipino workers in countries with existing bans.
In a statement, recruitment consultants Lito Soriano and Emmanuel Geslani said it is important to police well the city of Dubai, UAE since it has become the forefront of trafficked OFWs.
“The Philippine and UAE governments should forge an anti-human trafficking agreement to stem the tide of illegally trafficked Filipinos to countries, where the Philippines has banned deployment of OFWs,” said Soriano.
In particular, the recruiters called on UAE authorities to exert efforts to shut down foreign placement agencies operating in Dubai that are involved in the trafficking of Filipino maids.
They noted how foreign placement agencies are paid $4,000 to $5,000 by employers in Syria, Lebanon or Jordan to procure domestic workers from illegal or legal recruiters in Manila.
He said most of trafficked OFWs are women and are being sent to Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.
“The trafficking of Filipina maids to Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria continues unabated in the city of Dubai even as the Philippine government exerts its best effort to clampdown in illegal recruiters,” said Geslani.
They noted how Dubai is being used by illegal and legal recruiters as the transit point of Filipinos arriving from Manila using either tourist visas or POEA-issued documents before they are shipped by these foreign placements agencies.
