Porac pig farms to get permits
May 7, 2011
THE Porac Municipal Government is set to issue permits to 10 piggery farms in the town.
Regional Health Unit physician Edgar Lacanlale, during Friday’s committee hearing presided by Board Member Nestor Tolentino, said the quarterly monitoring has yielded the necessary reports for four piggeries in Barangay Sta. Cruz and six farms in Barangay Paralaya.
The move is in compliance with the necessary inspection set by the Municipal Government and the Pampanga Provincial Board as prerequisite for the issuance of business and operation permits.
This came after permits of hog farms here were put on hold after complaints from cause-oriented groups about the foul stench coming from the hog farms.
Lacanlale said the inspection team forwarded the reports to Mayor Condralito Dela Cruz, stressing that the hog farms will be given permits after complying with the set of requirements set by government agencies.
He also reported that a municipal ordinance is now in the preliminary hearing stage to monitor and control backyard hog farmers that form part of the majority of smaller hog farms in Porac.
Also a comprehensive land use plan is also in the works to properly designate the correct use of commercial and agricultural lands in the town.
Board Member Tolentino, for his part, said other piggery farms in other barangays of Porac should also comply with the necessary monitoring and requirements.
He said hog farms should continue the cleanliness in their farms to avoid complaints from residents.
Unsatisfied
Joyce Tamayo of Krusada Kontra Amoy (KKA) said the smell was not entirely eliminated as there are certain months when the smell is very intolerable.
Tamayo, along with their group, was present in the meeting to renew their complaints against hog farms.
He said their group is disappointed and no longer has confidence with the monitoring teams. They are moving for the relocation of hog farms, he said.
Tamayo said that though they are willing to participate in monitoring efforts, they believe that monitoring is merely “ningas kugon.”
Fairness
Hog farm owner Johnson Dycaico said complainants should be fair with their comments and look at the efforts of hog farms that are complying with the rules set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
He said hog farms have taken steps in improving their operations, adding that they should be given fair evaluation based on steps they have taken to improve sanitary conditions.
Relocation, he said, is no longer necessary if hog farms are complying with sanitary laws and not capitalize on subjective complaints.
Reactivate
Meanwhile, Joseph Meneses of the DENR said there is a need to reactivate the multi-tripartite monitoring team which is manned by government agencies, the local government and the non-government groups for the regular monitoring of the said hog farms.
