Pasay court allows Arroyo to visit Iggy’s wake

MANILA (2nd update, 2 p.m.) — The Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) has allowed detained Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to visit the wake of her brother-in-law, Negros Occidental Representative Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo on Saturday.
Pasay City RTC branch 112 Presiding Judge Jesus Mupas granted the request of Arroyo to be allowed to leave the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) where she is under hospital arrest to pay her last respects to her late brother-in-law at the family residence in La Vista, Quezon City.
Mupas allowed Arroyo to visit the wake Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Iggy’s body is originally scheduled to arrive from London Friday night but some delays have pushed its arrival to Saturday night.
The Negros Occidental lawmaker died on January 26 after suffering a heart attack in London, where he had sought treatment for cirrhosis of the liver.
With the delay, Arroyo’s lawyer Benjamin Santos immediately filed another request, this time, asking Mupas to move the former leader’s visit to the wake from March 1 to 3.
Arroyo also further asked that she be allowed to stay in her La Vista residence where the wake will be held.
A wake for Iggy will be held for two days at the Arroyo home in La Vista, a day at the House of Representatives, two days in Bacolod City, and a day again at the Arroyo house in La Vista.
He will be buried at the North Cemetery in Manila beside his mother.
Pasay RTC spokesperson Felda Domingo said Mupas has set a hearing on Monday, February 27, on the latest request.
But the prosecution said they would oppose Arroyo’s request adding that allowing her to stay for three days at their residence is tantamount to house arrest.
“What she is asking in her latest motion is tantamount to a furlough and we well definitely oppose it,” Commission on Elections (Comelec) lawyer Maria Juana Valesa said.
Valesa added that Arroyo’s visit should only be limited to three hours and she should not be allowed to make the visit at the La Vista residence. Instead, she added, her visit should be at the wake in Congress where security would be no problem for the authorities.
The court earlier summoned the head of the Police Security Protection Office (PSPO), Chief Superintendent Lina Sarmiento to advice the court on the implications and measures needed to secure the former president if she is allowed to attend her brother in law’s wake.
