Pampanga LGUs among PH’s ‘most competitive’

The National Competitiveness Council (NCC) named the City of San Fernando as the third among 122 cities covered by the 1st Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index, after Cagayan De Oro and Iloilo City. Others in the top 10 are Butuan, Bacolod, Koronadal, San Fernando City (La Union), Olongapo, Naga, and Marikina.
Of the 163 first-class municipalities surveyed by the NCC, Guagua town ranked 6th while the local government unit of Mexico landed in the 10th spot in the top 10 list composed of first placer San Francisco (Agusan del Sur), followed by Carmona (Cavite), Daet (Camarines Norte) Gen. Trias (Cavite), Guimba (Nueva Ecija), Surallah (South Cotabato), Taytay (Rizal), and Prosperidad (Agusan del Sur).
According to Central Luzon Competitiveness Council chairman and Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. vice chairman Rene Romero, the Pampanga local government units (LGU) were named by the Guillermo Luz-led NCC during its recent Competitiveness Summit in Manila.
“The criteria in the competitiveness index and survey conducted from January 31 to December 31, 2012 included economic dynamism, government efficiency and infrastructure. We also looked at how LGUs performed in terms of business registrations, employment, finance, recognized business groups, and plus growth in gross sales of registered businesses,” he said.
Romero told Sun.Star Pampanga that the index also took criminality, education and health into consideration.
“We’re really proud that Pampanga was the only province in the list that had three competitive LGUs for the past year,” he added.
Gov. Lilia Pineda, meanwhile, expressed joy over the citation of the Pampanga LGUs and said that other towns should emulate the three.
“Masayang-masaya ako sa pagkakasali nila sa top 10 most competitive towns and cities. I hope that our other towns and cities will follow their accomplishment and make them models,” she said.
The governor noted that she is optimistic with on-going developments in her hometown Lubao and nearby Bacolor in the third district, they will also emerge as one of the most competitive local government units in the future to lead Pampanga’s other municipalities.
