Pampanga joins campaign to build 10,000 classrooms

ANGELES CITY – A campaign to build 10,000 classrooms in the country gained support in Pampanga as 33 rooms will be done for the province.
Ten Moves!, the campaign to build classrooms around the Philippines, recently wrapped-up its Luzon road show with the launch of a local campaign at Holy Angel University (HAU) here.

The campaign completed 27 classrooms for 15 schools in Pampanga, while at least six additional classrooms are awaiting completion.
Ten Moves! expressed gratitude to its corporate partners for bringing the campaign to the province. They are HAU, the People Power Volunteers for Reform and Mitsubishi Corporation.

“Ten Moves! is a campaign to raise resources for 10,000 classrooms to be constructed all over the Philippines, and aims to encourage Filipinos here and abroad to give P10 per day. To build 10,000 classrooms, Ten Moves! needs two million Filipinos to contribute to the campaign. With the help of every individual organization, we can contribute to efforts all over the country to address one of the biggest challenges to the education sector,”
the group said in a statement.

The campaign was launched in October 2011 and, since then, 1,277 were built under Bayanihang Pampaaralan, the mother campaign of TEN Moves!
At least P49 million has been raised in cash and through donations or pledges, it said.

Emmanuel So, coordinator for the People Power Volunteers for Reform and one of TEN Moves’ key provincial partners, said “the campaign is an opportunity for individuals and organizations alike to resolve one of the country’s longstanding challenges.”

“With the help and support of every Filipino, our dream of giving each child a second home where they could fulfil their potential would come true,” said So. “Ten pesos a day will go a long way to ensuring that each child gets the education that they deserve.”

“Our goal is to help the Department of Education in reversing the education crisis, and one of the ways we can help our children is to ensure that they have adequate facilities,” said Cecile Alcantara, Co-Convenor of the 57-75 Education Reform Movement. “With every classroom, we’re giving schools, teachers and students an environment where they would be able to focus on lessons and enjoy learning.”

Mitsubishi Corporation Corporate Division Manager Kazumasa Sakakura, in a statement, stressed the importance of investing in the country’s youth and in helping in initiatives such as TEN Moves!

“We believe that the Philippines’ best asset is its human resource,” said Sakakura. “We strive to nurture this strength by contributing to the education sector particularly on the development of the youth and therefore contribute to the nation-building efforts.”

Department of Education Undersecretary Mario Deriquito, one of TEN Moves’ prime movers, has been travelling around the country for the past year, launching local campaigns from Metro Manila to Mindanao, and has witnessed the impact of classrooms on students and their families.

“Throughout the entire country, our small steps to 10,000 classrooms have yielded inspiring results,” said Deriquito. “These classrooms not only give hope to children, but also inspire an entire community.”
