Palace won’t pressure Cuevas to quit

MALACANANG will never dip its hands in the prosecution of Chief Justice Renato Corona, or even pressure his lead defense counsel to resign, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said Tuesday.
Retired Supreme Court justice Serafin Cuevas was reportedly asked by an unidentified Palace emissary to withdraw from the impeachment case in exchange for the withdrawal of the criminal case against dismissed National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Magtanggol Gatdula.
Gatdula, who has been linked in the alleged kidnapping and extortion of an undocumented Japanese woman, is a member of the Iglesia ni Cristo, which Cuevas represents as the main legal counsel.
“I seriously doubt the veracity of the report. I only discuss the case of former director Gatdula with the President although there were times that the Executive Secretary (Paquito Ochoa) joined the discussion. Why are some sectors trying to link this case with the impeachment? It’s just unfair,” de Lima told reporters.
Cuevas has since denied that Malacañang was putting pressure on him but the newspaper that conducted the interview at his Makati City office last Saturday stood by the past pronouncement of the 83-year-old justice.
For his part, defense spokesperson Ramon Esguerra said they told Cuevas to just set aside the issue since he has no intention of resigning anyway.
“He (Cuevas) provides a clear leadership for the panel. We believe him,” he said.
In a separate report, Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Ronald Llamas denied Tuesday that he was the Palace emissary who was pressuring Cuevas to leave the defense panel.
“There was no emissary from the Palace — not I nor anyone else — for the simple reason that there was no pressure exerted whatsoever by Malacañang either on Justice Cuevas or the INC,” Llamas said in a statement.
The 83-year-old lawyer refused to name the supposed emissary but hinted that the person was his former student.
Llamas said he was never a student of Cuevas.
Cuevas later denied that the Palace is pressuring him, adding no emissary was sent to talk to him.
“It’s funny how the Corona propagandists are not tripping over one another with the lies they are trying to peddle to the public to divert attention from the damning pieces of evidence being unearthed against Corona,” Llamas added.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte also defended Llamas on the allegations against him.
“That’s a bit peculiar because here you have a story of a person who is supposedly identified as the one exerting pressure, while the person who is allegedly being pressured has denied being pressured,” she said.
She said the Palace will hold further comment until Cuevas resolved his issue with the media agency who reported his interview.
She also refused to comment on the reported recent meeting of Llamas with the INC. “I will ask Secretary Llamas if there is a grain of truth to that report.”
The Philippine Daily Inquirer has released the transcript and the audio of its interview with Cuevas.
Malacanang earlier said that retraction of Cuevas is just a “distraction” of the impeachment proceedings.
Meantime, Social Welfare Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman denied rumors that she hatched a plan to swarm the High Court with people who will force Corona to resign.
Text messages with regard to the plan similar to the “Occupy Wall Street” protests in New York have circulated in media on Monday after Corona repeatedly said he will not vacate his post pending conviction by the Senate impeachment court.
Two fire trucks were already placed in the High Court grounds but Court spokesperson Midas Marquez could not provide an explanation why they were there. Security within the Court’s premises has also been beefed up by members of the Manila Police District.
“I am not involved in planning any such actions of ‘Occupy Supreme Court’ or mobilizing people. The impeachment process is ongoing. I believe in that constitutional process,” Soliman said in a text message to reporters.
Soliman is a former member of the Black and White Movement, which held several protests against then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who survived four impeachment attempts on vote-rigging and corruption. ((Virgil Lopez/Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
