Palace: Chinese still buys Philippine bananas

MALACAÑANG belied on Sunday reports that the Chinese are not buying bananas coming from the Philippines.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala personally checked the report and found out that it was not true.
“Secretary Alcala is currently in Zamboanga and he had spoken about it there. He said because of that report he had it checked and said that our exports that were cleared by China were still being bought,” Valte said in an interview over Radyo ng Bayan.
Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) expressed fear that although China had allowed entry of Philippine bananas, Chinese buyers are shunning the products.
China had recently imposed restrictions on bananas coming from the country due to phytosanitary issues after pests were supposedly found in several shipments.
As of Saturday, Valte said 190 containers of bananas were allowed to enter into Chinese market.
She said the Department of Agriculture is still doing additional measures to double check banana exports. The joint Philippine and Chinese quarantine officials in China are also double checking shipments to make sure that they are free from pests, she added.
Valte said the issue on banana exports has nothing to do with the month-long standoff between Philippines and China over the Panatag shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
“It’s always been phytosanitary. If you track the progress of the story… even before the issue in Bajo de Masinloc happened, meron na pong ganitong (there are similar) concern even before that, so that strengthens the position that it has always been a phytosanitary issue,” she said.
She said that while the import restrictions of China started to ease, the government will keep looking for other markets for Philippine bananas and one of the markers would be Singapore.
Other alternative markets being eyed by the government include Russia, Malaysia, Ukraine and some countries in Middle East.
