Palace admits failure to trace leak of Sona 2010 speech

MALACANANG admitted Wednesday that it failed to trace, let alone identify who leaked President Benigno Aquino III’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) last year.
The government is doing everything to prevent the President’s speech from being leaked to anyone prematurely this time, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.
“We’ve discussed several measures on how to avoid a leakage. It’s now being finalized to make sure that what we’ll be doing will not be prematurely leaked to anyone,” Lacierda said.
Malacanang was strongly criticized by the media during the Sona of Aquino last July 2010 when his speech was leaked to a television network, which posted a copy in its website shortly after the President delivered it in the House of Representatives.
President Aquino ordered an investigation on the matter but Lacierda said the Palace was not able to find out where it came from.
“The President told us to be more careful next time. Last year, many people were given copies of the speech so we can’t tell where the leak came from,” he said.
“I can assure you that this time around, there will be no premature leaks of the Sona speech,” he stressed.
President Aquino is set to deliver his second Sona on July 25.
Lacierda refused to give details about the speech of Aquino but he noted that it will not be too lengthy.
He said the President is busy with formulating the speech for his second Sona.
