Now it’s sweet red wines

Paul Franson | Posted: Thursday, October 20, 2011

First it was a resurgence of rosé wine, then riesling made a comeback, and it was only recently that sales of slightly sweet Muscat wines have gone through the roof.
Now odd red wine table blends, often sweetish, are the hottest wines in the market.
These trends have been irrelevant to most Napa Valley wineries, though not to all: Trinchero’s Menage à Troix and Quitessa’s The Prisoner are two of the market leaders in the blended reds, for example.
And the most popular wines in the tasting rooms at both V. Sattui and Castello di Amorosa the last I heard were sweet Napa gamay blends. That’s not too surprising, since sweet red “burgundy” and “chianti” have always been popular from Carlo Rossi, Franzia and other low-end brands.
Even so, Napa cabs that sell for $40 to $75 are making a comeback, and the shortages that are sure to follow this year’s anemic harvest will likely firm demand and prices even more
Fortunately, there’s plenty of room in the wine market for many tastes.

Wine tourism conference
The first Wine Tourism Conference in North America is Nov. 16-17 at the Napa Valley Marriott.
Since wine tourism means restaurants, concerts, B&Bs, delis and weddings as much as wine in most wine regions of North America, attendees will be surprised to find that Napa Valley has become one of the world’s top wine tourism destinations without any of those (or almost any).
Maybe it’s the wine…
Speakers for the two-day program of general sessions and panel discussions include:
• Caroline Beteta, California Travel & Tourism Commission; Dr. Steven S. Cuellar, professor of economics, Sonoma State University; Ray Isle, executive wine editor, Food & Wine magazine; Leslie Sbrocco, journalist and TV host; Sara Schneider, wine editor, Sunset magazine; Clay Gregory, president, Napa Valley Destination Council; Michael Mondavi, founder, Folio Fine Wine Partners; and Allen Shoup, managing partner, Long Shadows Vintners and former president of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.
The conference includes a Nov. 16 wine reception and farm-to-table food and wine pairing dinner hosted by Napa Vintners and Napa Valley Destination Council.
The fee is $350.

How do you rank in district to consumer sales?
The 2012 Direct to Consumer Wine Symposium has launched the DTC Winery Check Up to help wineries judge their direct-to-consumer sales against competitors.
The results for individual wineries will be kept confidential but each participating winery will receive a free report on how they compare.
The short survey will be analyzed by Ross Goodwin of Bennett Valley Group, the research partner for the symposium.
Results will be presented during the Symposium on Jan. 19.
Sign-up at dtcwinesymposium.com/survey.php.
For questions, contact Ross Goodwin at 526-6726 or ross@bennettvalleygroup.com.

Sonoma State creates online wine business course
Sonoma State University’s Wine Business Institute is launching an online wine business management course Nov. 7.
Tim Hanni MW, who sits on the board of directors for the Institute of Masters of Wine and whose wine and food principles have been adopted by the Wine & Spirits Education Trust in London, will teach the course, the first level in a three-part series.
Inspired by Sonoma State’s wine MBA the wine business management classes allow students to strengthen their knowledge of wine business fundamentals, marketing and finance and accelerate their career opportunities.
The series is for professionals in the industry who want to advance their knowledge of wine business operations, for winemakers or viticulturists wanting to expand their understanding of business strategies and principles, and for professionals in other industries seeking to enter the wine industry.
The classes include this foundation level along with intermediate and advanced levels, all taught online, with optional certification at the completion of the advanced level.
Registration is open at sonoma.edu/exed/wine-certificate.

Managing wine donations
Winery owners say that dealing with requests for donations is one of their biggest headaches. Dozens, sometimes hundreds, of worthy organizations ask for wine, a process that can overwhelm smaller wineries.
Well, they can’t help you decide who to give to, but Cellar Advisors is formalizing the donation process.
It can be a nice alternative to dumping wine through a flash site or selling at a big discount. The full price tax deduction may be more valuable than sale at a lower price and can benefit both the winery and charity
The company will advise on values stated for the donated wines, or recommend what you should donate, store the wines for free in dedicated donation lockers at one of its Domaine Wine Storage facilities, manage communication with the charity of your choice, or help you choose a charity, provide the charity with a valuation of the wine donated and manage paperwork as well as deliver wines to the event location.
