More flights diverted to Clark airport

CLARK FREEPORT — Due to poor visibility caused by torrential rains at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), five commercial aircrafts were diverted yesterday morning to the Clark International Airport here.

Two Philippine Airlines (PAL) Airbus A319 from Davao; two Airphil Express A-8 aircrafts from Masbate and Calbayog, respectively; and a Cebu Pacific Airbus A-320 from Thailand started diverting to Clark Airport at 9:05 a.m. due to poor visibility caused by heavy rains spawned by the Southwest Monsoon.

A few hours later, an Airphil Express-8 and Airphil Express Airbus A-320 from Naga City and Roxas City, respectively, landed at CIA before lunch yesterday.

The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) had been causing massive flooding in many parts of Metro Manila including Central and Northern Luzon since Saturday.

Last Sunday, a Qantas Airbus A-380 aircraft from Hong Kong was diverted to Clark Airport due to traffic congestions and no parking space at the NAIA.
Clark Airport is the only airport in the country that can accommodate an Airbus A-380 aircraft wherein the first Airbus A-380 aircraft landed at the airport during its probing flight in October 2007.

Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) President and CEO Victor Jose I. Luciano said that Clark Airport is ready anytime to accommodate diverted flights as a result of poor visibility and traffic congestions at the NAIA.

“Clark Airport had been accommodating diverted flights, and the airport is always ready of such emergency,” Luciano added.

He said that flight operations at Clark Airport have remained normal since Saturday despite several diverted flights from NAIA, adding that emergency hotlines at Clark Airport are open 24 hours a day.
