Local exec fears possible overflow at pump project

STO. TOMAS – A local government official here said the Pump Three Project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) might cause a possible overflow particularly during the rainy season.
Rodelio Garcia, municipal administrator, said the Pump Three Project is designed to sustain the volume of water from the upstream.

“Ang problema lang, dito sa amin ang end point ng project. Baka hindi nila ito agad mapondohan at lumubog ang ilang barangay dito sa aming bayan,” he said.
Garcia added that with the current condition of the Federoza River as being heavily silted, hundreds of residents living along its channel are at risk of losing their properties.
The project, which is being implemented by DPWH using foreign funds, traverses the barangays of Sto. Rosario, Pau and Pandaras.
“Kapag hindi ito natapos na mabuti, ‘yung tubig na galing sa itaas ay siyang maaaring magpalubog sa buong San Matias at malaki ang magiging problema natin pag nagkataon,” he said.
Aside from this, Garcia claimed that the agriculture industry in their town might also be affected should the project proponent fails to complete it.
“Siyempre mayroon din tayong mga pananim sa ilang mga lugar kung ang problema ay hindi maaagapan,” he said.
Meanwhile, Garcia said the DPWH has promised a P20-million budget for dredging and desilting activities at the Federoza River.
