Justice department: Ampatuan stays in prison
Saturday, July 16, 2011
MANILA — Massacre suspect Zaldy Ampatuan will remain at a maximum security cell in Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City even if he testifies on alleged electoral fraud in the 2007 senatorial elections, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said.
De Lima said massacre is a serious case; hence, the testimony of the former governor should not be considered a trade-off for the other criminal cases being faced by Ampatuan.
She said even if Ampatuan will testify in the electoral fraud, it would have no effect on the massacre case and other cases because it was important to investigate such testimony.
Ampatuan, a former governor of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm), is one of the principal accused in the 2009 massacre of 57 people in Maguindanao province.
Ampatuan and some members of his family, including his father, are also facing separate plunder and gun possession charges.
De Lima said the former official will stay in jail even if he is under the government’s protection program unless a court orders for his transfer.
She said the affidavit and evidences submitted by Ampatuan are now under evaluation of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the legal team of MalacaƱang.
On Thursday, President Benigno Aquino III assured the families of the massacre victims that he will do everything in his power to give them justice following a meeting in MalacaƱang.
Maguindanao Governor Ismael Mangudadatu, whose wife and relatives are among the victims, said Aquino assured them that the fight for the massacre case will continue and the President will remain on their side.
He said the President, as well as de Lima and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, made it clear Thursday that there was no compromise between the Palace and the Ampatuans regarding the massacre case.
Mangudadatu, together with other families of the victims, opposed the bid of Ampatuan to become a state witness in the gruesome Maguindanao killings.
He said the President wanted the former governor to talk more so that the government gets more information on the massacre and other cases.
De Lima on Friday said nobody knows the real intention of Ampatuan for revealing information about alleged graft by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and massive cheating during the 2007 senatorial elections.
Aside from the former Armm governor, other principal accused in the massacre case are former Datu Unsay, Maguindanao mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr.; former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr.; former acting Maguindanao governor Sajid Ampatuan; Akmad Ampatuan; Anwar Ampatuan; and 190 others.
