‘Juaning’ death toll now at 31

MANILA (2nd updated 9:06 a.m.) — The death toll from Tropical Storm “Juaning” (international codename: Nock-ten) has risen to 31, the national disaster council said.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRMMC), in its 6 a.m. Thursday bulletin, showed another recorded fatalities.
The latest fatalities include two in Quezon province, and one each in Catanduanes and Camarines Norte, bringing the number of fatalities in Catanduanes and Camarines Norte to six and seven, respectively.
NDRMMC also recorded two deaths in Cavite, one each in Camarines Sur, Marinduque, Iloilo, Siquijor and Las Piñas City, and nine deaths in Albay, which is now under state of calamity.
The disaster council also reported that the number of displaced families rose to 130,225 or equivalent to 648,362 individuals. It added 36 others were also injured.
It also said 27 people remain missing as “Juaning” moves out of the Philippine waters Thursday.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), in its 5 a.m. Thursday bulletin, said “Juaning” was over the West Philippine Sea heading towards China.
“Juaning” was 240 kilometers southwest of Laoag City, as of 4 a.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 120 kph.
The storm slightly intensified while over the West Philippine Sea.
It is expected to be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Thursday but storm warning remains in several areas.
Public storm signal number one is still up in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, La Union, Pangasian, and Zambales.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced the resumption of classes at all levels in the National Capital Region except for Tonsuya Elementary School (kindergarten to grade 2) — in Malabon City Thursday.
DepEd also said classes in kindergarten for areas under signal number one were automatically suspended. (Sunnex)
