Hope springs for poor man with 12 kids

May 4, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Alejandro Fajardo, 42, could barely make ends meet with his meager income from occasional work as a construction worker.
From day-to-day, he would have to budget a few hundred pesos for food on the table to support his 12 children, majority of them still in school, as well as provide for his two grandchildren from his oldest daughter.
Fajardo and his family live in a small house in Barangay Maimpis where his wife Florencita takes care of the whole family despite of the odds. Their eldest daughter Floricel married at an early age and now has two children. Floricel still lives with her family in what could barely pass for a home.
“Life had been unforgiving, though I do not regret having many children. I feel sometimes ashamed that I could not provide for them,” Fajardo said in the vernacular, adding that he worries also for his 9-year-old Trishia who is suffering from a terrible speech defect.
Fajardo said that though his hopes of getting any help had evaporated long ago, he has not sulked nor contemplated on doing bad things just to get out of his financial troubles.
Help from a congressman
Then help came from an unlikely individual, a staff of Third District Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. visited the Fajardo household to ask questions on the current financial standing of the family.
At first, Fajardo did not know what to make of the sudden appearance of hope.
“We were wondering how the congressman knew of our plight. It was unbelievable that ordinary people like us would concern him,” Fajardo said.
The staff of Gonzales who was earlier instructed to create a survey of poor families in the area was the one who found the Fajardo family.
The family was included among the roster of beneficiaries of the SULONG TRABAHO nang DONG GONZALES (STRA-DG) that gives free pedicabs for poor families as means of an easy livelihood. Gonzales even promised to shoulder the initial line-route requirements for the pedicabs.

Honest job
Gonzales explains that the pedicab program is the most viable support program for poor families living in urban communities. He said the program requires no capital, environment friendly and provides a daily dose of exercise for the operator.
“Rather than giving them money, it is better to give them livelihood that they can readily have an income,” Gonzales said, adding that his office has given a total of 60 units of the pedicabs since their inception last year.
Over the weekend, Gonzales distributed 10 units to ten poorest of the poor families in the district. The pedicabs cost some P10,000 each and could yield a minimum of P300 to P600 per day on the part of the operator depending on the route of operation.
Fajardo said he was thankful for the support given by Gonzales and his staff. Gonzales, for his part, said that he would be extending scholarship grants to the children of the families who could not send their children to school.
