Food and Wine
Food and wine are at the heart of the French culture and Dordogne takes this to the extreme. The best way to experience this is through the colourful markets, welcoming vineyards and local restaurants.
Markets
Most villages have a weekly market and they are the best place to experience french living and its wonderful produce. Eymet, only 5 minutes away has its market on a Thursday morning, packed with wine, food and other local produce. Hours could be spent sitting on the square watching the world go by with a glass of rose wine. Local specialities include Foie Gras, truffles, prunes, walnuts
Below is a small selection of local markets.
Local Markets
Day Market
Monday Miramont, Beynac, La Fleix, St Alvere
Tuesday Castillonnes, Le Bugue, Eymet*, Cenac, Riberac,
Thenon, Thiviers
Wednesday Bergerac, Hautefort, La Tour Blanche, Monesterol,

*Eymet Night Market, every Tuesday night during the summer only.
Another way to sample the fantastic local produce is to sample the local restaurants which are abundant, the general standard is high and, frequently excellent value. In Eymet there are several good restaurants such as the La Creperie, La Bastide, La Cour d’Eymet and the Pizzeria. A recent discovery and acclaimed by all who visit is Ma Maison in nearby Sauvetat du Dropt.
Wine
The winetasting alone could easily fill a two week holiday, the variety is so vast. Situated on both sides of the Dordogne river, the Bergerac vineyard covers 13.000 hectares on 93 villages. These vineyards produce 75 % of the Dordogne’s production. The cellar of every “wine cooperative” offers its precious wine for tasting, particularly the Bergerac and Monbazillac cellars which are open to visitors. It is important not to forget the smaller family run vineyards, which are full of character and charm as well as superb wine. We can arrange wine tours should you wish.
Among the 12 appellations, the most famous are AOC Bergerac, Côtes de Bergerac, Pécharmant, Rosette, Monbazillac, Saussignac and Montravel. Slightly further afield are the vineyards of Bordeaux, St Emilion, Pomerol and Fronsac, yet all still only an hour away. St Emilion is a beautiful town and must to visit. A walk up the winding roads of the village is justified when you reach the top and the see the views over the St Emilion vineyards. There are some fantastic restaurants in St Emilion and a stop for lunch is well advised.
Don’t miss the Sigoules Wine Festival – an extravaganza spanning a long week-end, usually at the end of July.
We stock ‘house wine‘ from Chateau La Colline at direct from chai prices for your convenience.
