Group: Hog farms continue to operate
June 10, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — An environmentalist group has expressed dismay over local officials for the continued operation of big hog farms in Porac town.
Sonny Dobles, an official from the Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM), said Mayor Condralito Dela Cruz has disobeyed the earlier directive of Governor Lilia Pineda not to issue business permits to the hog farms.

“The earlier directive of the governor to Mayor De La Cruz not to issue business permits to the hog farms until the complaints had been addressed and resolved fell on deaf ears,” Dobles said.
“We can also assume that De La Cruz gave permits to the piggeries because they are operating harmoniously and abusing with impunity,” he added.
Dobles said the laudable health program of Pineda is useless because of the diseases caused by the mishandling of the piggeries’ waste based on international studies.
“It’s also useless to give away medicines when we don’t stop the source of disease,” Dobles said.
In a separate interview, Governor Pineda was surprised that hog farms in Porac are continuing their operations.
“The piggeries were not supposed to be given permits yet,” Pineda said.
She said she will ask fourth district Board Member Nestor Tolentino, chairman of the committee on health, to “immediately look” into the complaints of the PGKM.
Meanwhile, Tolentino said he will call an emergency meeting early next week and invite Mayor De La Cruz and his municipal health officials, hog farm owners, Environment Management Bureau (EMB) and barangays officials, including the PGKM.
Joel Mapiles, provincial information officer, said mayors are the ones tasked under the Constitution to resolve the problems on suspected polluters in their respective jurisdictions.
“The governor is already taking care of many things. De La Cruz should be on top of the situation as mayor of Porac,” said Mapiles.
He added that the governor’s actions and decisions are geared toward the protection of the welfare and health of the people.
Meanwhile, the PGKM said continued operations of the hog farms have caused inconvenience to businesses, adversely affecting the health of residents.
Dobles said food served at the Royal Garden Golf and Country Club (RGGCC) is easily plagued by flies.
“Is this the way to help businesses thrive by letting flies compete with the people eating? Is this the way to promote tourism by spreading stench caused by piggeries?” Dobles asked.
Dobles said the town mayor is obviously in favor of the piggeries, which is not beneficial to the people in general.
