Gov wants dikes design improved

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Gov. Lilia Pineda is batting for well-planned and durable flood control projects to drastically limit the occurrence of perennial flooding in Pampanga.

Pineda said that “money is put to waste and the problem is not solved” when flood mitigation projects could not handle the abnormal flow of water hitting the province.

Pineda urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office to closely coordinate its designs and plans of slope protection and dikes to ensure their reliability.

Pineda earlier said the DPWH’s tail dike project in Sta. Rita, Minalin was easily destroyed by floodwaters spawned by monsoon rains.

“We have to sit down and carefully plan our dikes with experts. This is the only way to ensure they can last for a very long time,” she said in the dialect.

Pineda said the dikes “should be bigger and better,” especially those near the flood-prone Fourth District towns, including Masantol, Sto. Tomas, Macabebe and Minalin.

At least 194 villages remained flooded in Pampanga and most of which are in the four towns of the Fourth District.
