Gov. Pineda wants poor students finish college

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO –“We need to support the poor but deserving Kapampangan students to alleviate their marginalized condition by helping them finish their college education.”

Thus, said Governor Lilia “Nanay” G. Pineda as she led the distribution of educational financial assistance to some 574 deserving and bright students who want to pursue their college education.

Pineda said eligible to avail the cash benefit under the education program are barangay public high school class valedictorians, salutatorians and first honorable mentions who shall receive P10,000; second and third honorable mentions–P5,000; 4th to 8th honorable mentions–P2,500; and, graduates of Alternative Learning System -(ALS)–P5,000.

The governor added that every year thereafter these Capitol scholars, including the graduates of ALS, are guaranteed to receive the same financial assistance provided they maintain their grades as follows: Valedictorian, salutatorian and first honorable mention, 85%; second to third honorable mentions, 80%; and ALS graduates shall maintain passing grades for the semester.

As of yesterday, the governor initially distributed financial grants to 65 Top 10 students and 18 ALS graduates in the First District; 270 Top 10 students and 29 ALS graduates in the Second District; 162 Top 10 students and 30 ALS graduates in the Third District.

Gershon Serrano, a graduate of ALS, lauded the educational program of the provincial government as he stressed that the assistance “is very essential in their pursuit for quality education and for their aspiration as future professionals.”

“It’s a big help for us who are less in life but are still dreaming that someday we may be free from poverty through pursuing college education. Thanks to Nanay Gov,” Serrano said.

Joren Tallada, another beneficiary said, he salutes the governor for putting the future of the youth first in her program of government as everyone is given equal opportunity to finish their college through the scholarship support of the provincial government.

“In behalf of the scholarship beneficiaries, we would like to extend our gratitude to our benefactors who, in one way or another, had given us the opportunity to dream, survive and be catalysts of change,” he said.

It was learned that the beneficiaries may lose their educational cash benefits should they obtain failing grade; drop any of their subjects during the semester; or, disciplined by the school authorities for violating school’s rules and regulations and also for unruly behavior.
