Gonzales is 1st Filipino lawmaker to become Asep member
Tuesday, September 27, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr. (3rd district, Pampanga) will be the first Filipino civil engineer to be conferred honorary membership by the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (Asep).
Gonzales, who holds degrees in civil engineering and environmental and sanitary engineering from the Mapua Institute of Technology, will receive the honorary membership during the 15th Asep International Convention and the Asep 50th anniversary celebration on Friday, September 30, at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati.
President Benigno Aquino III has declared September as Structural Engineering Month through Proclamation 164.
Gonzales, in a statement, said he is humbled and honored by his conferment of an honorary member by the Asep whose leadership and direction become even more important in this era of globalization, rapid development and climate change.
“Certainly, structural engineers play a very crucial role in ensuring the safety and reliability of built structures for the benefit and welfare of our clientele, the general public,” he said.
Gonzales, who has had a long successful career as top-notch private and government contractor before he entered politics in 2004, said structural engineering is a field of specialization among civil engineers that analyzes quality and safety of buildings and infrastructure.
“In a country like the Philippines, which is constantly vulnerable to earthquakes, typhoons and other calamities that challenge the safety and strength of our buildings and other infrastructure, structural engineers indeed play a crucial role,” he said.
Gonzales, who also gets the distinction of the first Filipino lawmaker to become an honorary member of Asep, was recently featured in a book published by the 15th Congress titled “In the Name of the People” for his privilege speech that called for a comprehensive and urgent review of all structures in the Philippines following the devastating earthquake that hit Japan.
The book is a compendium of the best 50 speeches delivered during the 15th Congress. Gonzales made his speech on his second term as lawmaker.
Gonzales is known for authoring two landmark legislations, namely Republic Act (RA) 9505, otherwise known as the Dong’s Law, which provided for the continued and comprehensive rehabilitation of the town of Bacolor from the devastation it suffered as a result of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991, and RA 9832 for the conversion of the Don Honorio Ventura School of Arts and Trade into the Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University.
DHVTSU, the oldest trade school in Asia, is the first and only state university in Pampanga.
The university recently paid tribute to Gonzales for his initiatives and other projects for DHVTSU and the third district that bolstered progress and development, benefitting mostly the poor and underprivileged through his legislative and political decisions.
